CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – After leading the Seawolves to a non-conference win over Fresno State and an important conference victory over Albany, Stony Brook senior midfielder Demmianne Cook earned America East women’s lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week and junior goalie Frankie Caridi was named Defensive Player of the Week, the conference office announced Monday.
New Hampshire freshman Nicole Grote also was honored with her first career Rookie of the Week award after helping the Wildcats to a non-conference win over Iona.
Cook (East Northport, N.Y.) continued her torrid scoring pace, scoring 10 goals and totaling two assists in Stony Brook wins against Fresno State and Albany. She scored seven goals on eight shots to go with three ground balls, six draw controls and two caused turnovers in a 20-2 win over the Bulldogs. She followed that with three goals, two assists, three ground balls, two draw controls and two caused turnovers to help Stony Brook beat Albany, 9-2, in a rematch of the 2012 America East title game. She averaged five goals and six points per game for the week as well as three ground balls and four draw controls per game. Cook is now just nine goals shy of tying her own record for goals in a season (68), and has registered at-least seven goals three times this year.
Caridi (East Northport, N.Y.) anchored a Stony Brook defense that matched a school-record for fewest goals allowed in a game (2) in back-to-back wins over Fresno State and Albany. As of last week, Caridi led the nation in both goals against average and save percentage. She allowed just three goals in two games last week, leading the conference with a 1.69 goals against average. Caridi made eight saves, notching a .727 save percentage. She also had four ground balls and one caused turnover in 106 total minutes in net.
Grote (Ellicott City, Md.) recorded career highs in assists (four) and points (seven) to lead New Hampshire to a 16-0 win against Iona. She led the team in both those stats and tied for the team lead in draw controls. Grote opened the game scoring on an unassisted goal with 2:55 elapsed. She then set up the third goal (16:02), scored the sixth goal (5:36) and assisted on the seventh (4:07) to record four points on eight of the team's first half goals.
