CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- The men and women from Boston University completed a sweep of the ECAC Swimming and Diving Championships for the first time program history this weekend. It was the second ECAC crown for the women and the first for the Terrier men. The UMBC men and the New Hampshire women also turned in strong meets at Harvard's Blodgett Pool.
Boston U. used a strong showing in the relay events to come away victorious on the women's side. Freshman Stephanie Nasson (Wrentham, Mass.) was also key, setting a school-record en route to winning the 1650 freestyle with a time of 16:27.57. Senior Melinda Matyas (Budapest, Hungary) claimed a victory on the one-meter boards with a score of 259.5. Meanwhile, the men got a win in the 800 free relay, and freshman Mun Hon Lee (Melbourne, Australia) broke two school records.
The UMBC men put an exclamation point on their meet by setting a school and meet record in the 400 free relay with an NCAA B Cut time of 2:58.47. In that relay, Mohamed Hussein (Cairo, Egypt) set a school record and earned NCAA Consideration with his 100 free split of 43.86. That was just one of four individual records that Hussein would break en route to being named Swimmer of the Meet. The senior also broke the UMBC, ECAC and pool records in the 200 IM prelims with a time of 1:44.60. That time is currently 16th in the country which gives Hussein a chance at competing in the NCAA Championships.
New Hampshire earned a second-place finish in the women's standings thanks to Co-Swimmers of the Meet Jenni Roberts (Springvale, Maine) and Katie Mann (Prince George, British Columbia). The two shattered the ECAC record in the 200 IM, taking first and second place, respectively, in the finals. Both swimmers achieved NCAA B Cuts in the process. Roberts also posted B cut times in the 100 fly and 200 fly events, while Mann posted B cuts in the 400 IM and the 200 breast.
