CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Three America East swimmers have earned invitations to the NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships which will take place over the last two weeks of March. Mohamed Hussein of UMBC will compete in the men’s championship while New Hampshire’s Katie Mann and Jenni Roberts will swim in the women’s championship. This marks the third time in the past four years that the America East has sent at least one swimming & diving athlete to the NCAA Championships.
Hussein (Cairo, Egypt) becomes just the third UMBC Retriever to ever reach the national meet. The junior, fresh off of his second consecutive America East Most Outstanding Swimmer award, will compete in the 200 individual medley, 200 freestyle and 200 backstroke events. Hussein broke three conference records at this year’s championship meet and owns the UMBC school record in all three of these events.
One of two New Hampshire women to reach the national championships, Mann (Prince George, British Columbia) is also slated to swim three events. Her primary event will be the 400 individual medley, an event in which she owns the America East record time. The sophomore will also be swimming in the 200 individual medley and the 200 breaststroke.
Roberts (Springvale, Maine), like Hussein and Mann, will also be competing in a trio of events at the NCAA Championships. After being named Most Outstanding Swimmer at her first America East Championship, Roberts will swim the 200 individual medley as well as the 100 and 200 butterfly events. The junior broke the America East records in the 200 IM and the 200 fly and went on to be named a Co-Swimmer of the Meet at the ECAC Championships with Mann.
Both championships will be held at the IU Natatorium in Indianapolis, Ind. on the campus of Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis. The women will compete March 21-23 while the men’s championship will run March 28-30. Broadcasts of these events can be found on both ESPN3 and ESPNU.
