CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -Home teams posted a 3-1 record Saturday in America East women's basketball action, with UMBC notching the lone road win of the day.
Boston U. (18-4, 8-1) edged out Hartford (14-8, 5-4) to get the day started, in a defensive battle that was regionally televised on NESN, with the Terriers winning 42-40. The Terriers swept the season series from the Hawks for the second straight season, thanks to heroics from Chantell Alford. Alford was held in check for most of the game, but scored Boston U.'s final eight points, including a 3-point play with 1:37 left that gave Boston U. the lead for good. She also converted a free throw, and the Terrier defense forced a turnover on an offensive foul with less than 10 seconds remaining to earn the win.
UMBC (7-15, 3-6) earning its first road win of the season, beating Maine (2-15, 1-8) 86-79 at Alfond Arena. Raven Harris and Brittany Crowell had 20 points each to lead the charge for the Retrievers, who shot a season-high 34 3-pointers and connected on a season-best 12. UMBC led by as many as 14 points in the second half, but Maine would trim the deficit to seven in the final two minutes before free throws put the game away. Danielle Walczak and Liz Wood each had double-doubles to lead the Black Bears.
Stony Brook (12-10, 4-5) earned its first sweep of an America East opponent since 2010-11, beating New Hampshire (8-13, 3-6) for the second time this season, 60-47. Sabre Proctor led the Seawolves with 17 points, including a put-back with just over a minute to go that gave Stony Brook a double-digit lead and sealed the game. New Hampshire was led by Cari Reed who had 14 points.
Albany (18-3, 9-0) stayed unbeaten in conference play with a 69-41 win over Binghamton (4-18, 3-6). The Great Danes are averaging beating teams in conference play by 27.6 points per game. In the contest, Albany senior Julie Forster eclipsed the 1,000-point mark, becoming the first player in Great Dane history with 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds. Albany led from start to finish, taking a double digit lead at 18-6 with 10:44 to go in the first half after a layup by Shereesha Richards. Binghamton would come within single digits just one more time in the contest.
