BOSTON – The Boston University women’s lacrosse team
notched two overtime goals to upset No. 14/12
Massachusetts, 9-8, on Wednesday afternoon at Nickerson Field.
Senior Danielle Etrasco and sophomore Jenna Boarman each finished with two goals for the Terriers while junior Becca Church recorded a team-high three points (1g, 2a) to lead Boston U. Fellow junior Sydney Godett added a goal and an assist.
Senior Kristen Mogavero, junior Elizabeth Morse and freshman Sofia Robins also found the back of the net for the Terriers while freshman Ally Adams finished with two assists.
Junior goalkeeper Christina Sheridan made six saves on the afternoon and collected three ground balls. Robins led the team with three caused turnovers.
The Minutewomen went up 2-0 less than five minutes into the game with
goals from Sam Rush and Cori Murray, respectively, before Boarman got
the Terriers on the board with a tally at the 7:10 mark. UMass responded
just over two minutes later with a strike from Katie Ferris, but Robins
netted her first career-goal with 16:45 remaining in the first to make
it a one-goal game.
The Terriers scored two unanswered goals to start the second half, as
Boarman got her second of the day less than three minutes into the
stanza to tie the game at 4-4. Morse then got on the score sheet with a
goal at the 23:15 mark to give BU its first lead of the game, 5-4.
Rush knotted the game at 5-5 with just over 20 minutes to play before
Etrasco scored two unanswered goals for the Terriers to give BU a 7-5
lead with 10:40 to play. The Minutewomen scored the final two goals of
regulation, including Rush’s tally with 5:17 left, to tie the game at
7-7. Neither team could find the back of the net for the final five
minutes to ensure an overtime session.
Mogavero gave BU a one goal lead, 8-7, just under two minutes into
the extra period and Godett added a tally with 3:19 to play, which
proved to be the game-winner for BU. UMass managed to score a goal with
under a minute to go and controlled the ensuing draw, but Mogavero
caused a crucial turnover and the Terriers retained possession for the
remainder of overtime.
