CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Just one game on the docket in America East women’s
basketball on Sunday, as Albany (22-3, 13-0) visits Vermont (8-18, 5-8) at 2
p.m.
The Great Danes can clinch at-least a share of their first
America East regular-season title. Albany won its first America East
Championship title last year after finishing second to Boston U. during the
regular season.
Vermont can move into a tie for the No. 3 seed in the
America East Championship with UMBC with a victory. The Catamounts have lost
four of their last five contests heading into Sunday.
Stony Brook (14-14, 6-9) and Maine (4-23, 3-11) played the
most thrilling game of the day, as the Seawolves erased a 10-point second-half
deficit to grab a huge conference victory, 56-53. A 3-pointer from Lauren
Bodine with 12:31 left to go in the game but the Black Bears on top 39-29. From
there, Stony Brook slowly chipped away at the lead, taking its first lead of
the second half on a layup by Jessica Previlon with 4:55 to go.
Maine led one more time following a Chantel Charles layup,
but Sabre Proctor responded with a jumper to give the Seawolves the lead for
good. Teasha Harris hit a free throw with nine seconds left to give Stony Brook
a 56-53 lead, and Bodine’s 3-pointer at the buzzer was off the mark to give the
Seawolves the comeback win.
Binghamton (5-22, 4-10) won for the sixth-straight time on
New Hampshire’s (10-16, 5-9) home court, beating the Wildcats, 55-42. Mallory
Lawes and Jasbriell Swain scored 11 points each to lead the Bearcats, who
snapped a five-game losing streak with the victory. Binghamton used a 10-0 run
that gave the Bearcats a 42-31 lead with 5:44 left. New Hampshire cut the
deficit to five on an old-fashioned three-point play with 1:59 left. From
there, Binghamton hit all eight of its free-throw attempts to ice the game. Swain
scored six of her 11 in the final two minutes of the contest.
Boston U. (23-5, 13-2) bounced-back from a loss just two
days ago to top UMBC (6-8, 10-17), 72-51, on senior day. Two Terrier seniors,
Chantell Alford and Mo Moran, combined for 40 points in the contest. Alford
eclipsed the 20-point mark for the second-straight game, going for 26 points
and adding five assists. UMBC was within single digits, trailing 50-42 in the
late stages of the game, but a 15-2 run by the Terriers pushed the lead to 21
points to clinch the win.
