CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -
With just five playing dates left in the season, the battle for positioning in
the 2013 America East women’s basketball championship heats up with three games
on Wednesday, including a rare 1 p.m. tip.
UMBC (9-16, 5-7) and Stony Brook (13-13, 5-8) get things
started at 1 p.m. on Wednesday afternoon in a contest that will be available
regionally on Cablevision. Both teams have five wins in conference as four teams continue to battle for the No.
3 seed in the championship. The Seawolves are a half game behind the Retrievers
entering the contest. UMBC won the first meeting between the two schools,
70-59.
Hartford (17-9, 8-5) can clinch the No. 2 seed in the America
East Championship with a win and losses by both UMBC and Vermont on Wednesday.
The Hawks pay a visit to New Hampshire (9-15, 4-8), where the Wildcats are 6-3
at Lundholm Gymnasium this season. Hartford’s Amber Bepko has been on fire of
the last three games, registering games of 20, 21 and 16 points.
Vermont (8-17, 5-7) rounds out the schedule with a trip to
Maine (3-22, 2-10). The Catamounts defeated the Black Bears 61-53 at Patrick
Gym earlier this season, but will need to deal with standout freshman Liz Wood,
who is a six-time America East Rookie of the Week honoree.
