CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – With the first weekend of baseball completed, the Maine Black Bears and Stony Brook Seawolves claimed the first America East weekly honors, the conference office announced Monday.

Maine junior Colin Gay was named Player of the Week, while Stony Brook junior Frankie Vanderka was named Pitcher of the Week and freshman Daniel Zamora was named Rookie of the Week.

Gay (Franklin, Mass.) batted a league-best .444 to lead the Black Bears in a four-game series against Auburn. He collected eight hits in 17 at-bats, with four of those eight hits going for extra bases (three doubles and a home run), for a .778 slugging percentage. The junior also scored three runs and drove in three more, while going perfect in the field on 14 chances.

Stony Brook’s Vanderka (Levittown, N.Y.) tossed six scoreless innings at Florida International, scattering just four hits. He did not allow more than one baserunner in any of the six innings, holding FIU to 0-fo-6 with runners on base. Vanderka also struck out two batters while allowing just one leadoff batter to reach on his way to a no decision.

Seawolves’ freshman Zamora (La Puente, Calif.) had a tough-luck loss in Stony Brook’s 1-0 defeat at Florida International. Making his collegiate debut, Zamora pitched six inning, scattering five hits while walking one and striking out six. Five of his six punch-outs caught batters looking, as he threw 56 of his 83 pitches for strikes.
