In a battle for first place atop the America East men's basketball standings, Stony Brook's defense smothered Vermont as the Seawolves downed the Catamounts to take a 1 1/2 game lead atop the standings. Two more games take place Saturday with Binghamton hosting Maine and Hartford visting Albany.
On Friday, Stony Brook (19-6, 10-2 AE) held Vermont (16-9, 9-4 AE) to just 36 percent shooting for the game and only 19 second-half points en route to sixth win its last seven games. The win moved the Seawolves 1 1/2 games ahead of the Catamounts in the league standings. SBU has four games left, while UVM has three. Stony Brook's bench contributed 26 points, led by Marcus Rouse's 16. Sandro Carissimo paced UVM with 14 points.
On Saturday, Maine (10-15, 5-7 AE) goes for its third-straight win when it visits Binghamton (3-22, 1-11 AE), while Albany (18-8, 7-5 AE) and Hartford (14-11, 7-5 AE) battle for sole possession of fourth place in the league standings.
