Boston U.'s Agboola, Albany's Richards Capture Women's Basketball Weekly Awards

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – After leading their teams to perfect 2-0 records, Boston University junior Rashidat Agboola was named America East women’s basketball Player of the Week, while Albany freshman Shereesha Richards earned Rookie of the Week honors, the conference office announced Monday.

Agboola (Methuen, Mass.) averaged 15.0 points and 9.0 rebounds to go with 1.5 steals and 1.5 blocks in a 2-0 week for the Terriers. She started the week with 17 points and eight rebounds in a win over Stony Brook, going 6-of-6 from the field and 5-of-5 from the free throw line with a career-high three steals. The junior followed that with 13 points and 10 rebounds at Binghamton for her seventh double-double of the season. Agboola finished fifth in the conference in scoring, first in rebounding and third in field goal percentage, shooting 76.9-percent for the week.

Richards (Oceanview, N.J.) earned her sixth America East Rookie of the Week award,  helping the Great Danes to a 2-0 week, averaging 14.0 points, 5.0 rebounds, 3.5 steals, and 1.0 assists per game, while shooting 81.8 percent from the floor. In a win at home over UMBC, Richards scored a game-high 22 points while also grabbing six boards, and recording five steals and two assists. She shot 6-of-8 from the floor and 10-for-13 from the charity stripe. In a win on the road at Maine, Richards chipped in with six points and four rebounds, while also coming up with two steals. The rookie shot a perfect 3-for-3 against the Black Bears. Richards leads all freshmen in scoring at 9.4 points per game, ranks second in rebounding at 5.8 per game, and is first in the conference in shooting at 60 percent.

Albany is the lone unbeaten team in the America East. The last team to go undefeated in league play was Hartford in 2009-10… Stony Brook swept New Hampshire, marking the first time the Seawolves have swept an opponent since 2010-11… Albany and Boston U. reached the 20-win plateau for the second-straight season… Boston U. head coach Kelly Greenberg earned her 250th career win vs. UMBC… Albany’s Ebone Henry became the program’s all-time leading scorer with 21 points vs. Vermont. She has 1,562 career points… Albany’s 20-3 start is the best for any America East team since Hartford was 27-3 in 2009-10… Hartford has had eight different players lead the team in scoring this season… Stony Brook’s 12 wins are the most for the team since the 2006-07 season… Albany has an average margin of victory of 29.5 points in its first 11 conference games… Only three teams in league history have lost their conference openers and gone on to win the America East title… Binghamton’s win over Hartford was the first for the Bearcats over the Hawks at the Events Center since Feb. 23, 2005… Boston U. beat No. 17/15 St. John’s, marking the 1st non-conference win over a ranked team for the America East since 2009…  Stony Brook has a +3.7 rebounding margin. The Seawolves have not finished the year with a positive rebounding margin since 2006-07 (+1.0).
