CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Three America East women's basketball games took place on Saturday despite a blizzard that swept across most of the Northeast Region. Albany, Boston U. and UMBC were able to notch wins during the snowy conditions.
Albany (20-3, 11-0) remained the lone unbeaten team in America East play with an 86-54 win over Maine (2-21, 1-9). The Great Danes have an average margin of victory of 27.5 points per game in their 10 conference wins, and were led by Julie Forster's 25 points and 11 boards for her fourth double-double of the year. After Maine took a two-point lead, Forster tied the game as Great Danes took off, scoring nine
unanswered points to take a 27-20 lead in the first half. Maine's Liz Wood made a layup at 4:06
to pull back within five before the final media timeout of the first. Albany then
ended the first half on a 22-4 run to hold a 40-24 lead at the halftime break and take control of the game.
Boston U. (20-4, 10-1) had five players score in double figures as the Terriers won their 20th game of the year, beating Binghamton (4-20, 3-8), 73-51. Whitney Turner
led Boston U. with a career-high 14 points. Classmate Rashidat Abgoola
recorded her seventh double-double of the season with 13 points and a
team-high 10 rebounds.The Terriers led from start to finish, using a 15-2 run to take a 30-13 lead with less than three minutes to go in the first half.
UMBC (8-16, 4-7) hit a conference season-high 28 free throws, going 28-of-33 from the charity stripe to grab a 71-55 win over Vermont (7-16, 4-6). Kristin Coles had a double-double with 12 points (all from the free throw line) and 13 rebounds as all three Retriever guards scored in double figures. Leading by two points in the second half, UMBC went on a 10-0 run to take a 12-point lead and never looked back.
Stony Brook hosts Hartford in the lone game on Sunday afternoon, a contest that was rescheduled from Saturday due to the snowstorm. Tip is set for 3 p.m.
