Teams Look to Clinch Playoff Spots in #AEVB

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – With only four matches remaining in the America East volleyball regular-season, teams look to lock up playoff position this weekend. Heading into Friday, Albany holds a two-match lead over Providence, Hartford and Binghamton for the final playoff spot. UMBC and Stony Brook are tied for second, and New Hampshire stands alone in first.

Here is a look at Friday’s matches:

Stony Brook at UMass Lowell – 7 p.m.

  • The Seawolves swept UMass Lowell in the first-ever meeting between the two programs on Oct. 6.
  • Stony Brook hit .403 in the first meeting while holding the River Hawks to a .000 attack percentage.
  • The Seawolves rank second in the league during conference play with a .205 hitting percentage.      

Providence at Albany – 7 p.m.

  • Providence beat Albany for the first time in program history, 3-0, in the first match-up this season on Oct. 5.
  • The Friars out-hit Albany, .227-.122, in the match behind 18 kills and 10 digs from Kayla Fitzgerald.
  • Albany holds a two-match lead on Providence, Hartford and Binghamton for the final spot in the playoffs while sitting two matches behind New Hampshire for first place.
  • The Friars’ Fitzgerald and Mackenzie Ziegler are tied for seventh in the conference, averaging 3.00 kills per set.

UMBC at New Hampshire – 7 p.m.

  • Tori Forrest led UNH with 18 kills and 14 digs, while Sherelle Walker had 15 kills on a .225 hitting percentage for the Retrievers.
  • UMBC can pull into a tie for first with New Hampshire with a win.
  • The Wildcats lead the league in conference games in hitting percentage, opponent hitting percentage, assists and kills. On the other side, UMBC leads the conference in all games played in opponent hitting percentage, assists, kills and blocks.

Hartford at Binghamton – 7 p.m.

  • Dionna Kirton had 17 kills on a .533 hitting percentage to lead the Hawks, while Allison Hovie led the Bearcats with 11 kills.
