UMBC became the eighth team to open its season Monday, defeating Eastern (Pa.), 59-50, at home. The Retrievers started five players who were all making their collegiate debuts. Freshman Sara Tarbert starred for the home side, recording a double-double with 21 points and 10 rebounds to become the first America East player to notch a double-double in her first game since Binghamton's Jasbriell Swain in 2010.
Vermont also was in action on Tuesday, dropping a closely contested game at Dartmouth, 66-62. The game featured seven lead changes and neither team led by more than four points in the first 15 minutes. Niki Taylor led the Catamounts with 18 points, 16 in the second half, on six-of-six shooting from the charity stripe.
UMass Lowell travels to Yale in the only game on Tuesday. The River Hawks scored 74 points in their first Division I game, a 109-74 loss at home to Providence.
