CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The first America East women’s basketball weekly honors were announced Monday after the opening weekend of college basketball season concluded on Sunday. Reigning America East champion, Albany, won both its games over the weekend start 2-0, while Stony Brook started 1-1 and New Hampshire opened with a victory. Here are the season’s first award winners:
Player of the Week
Shereesha Richards, So., Albany
Oceanview, N.J.
- Led the conference in scoring at 19.0 per game and ranked second in rebounding at 10.5 per game in a 2-0 week for Albany.
- Also chipped in 3.5 steals per game and shot 60.7% from the field.
- Started the season with a double-double, scoring 13 points and pulling down 12 rebounds as the Great Danes beat Siena in the Albany Cup.
- Followed that with a career-high 25 points on 12-of-17 shooting in a win over Western Michigan. Also had nine rebounds, two assists and three steals.
Rookie of the Week
Kristina White, Fr., Vermont
Woodbury, Minn.
- Scored a game-high 18 points in her collegiate debut in a loss at Bryant.
- Also had four rebounds and connected on three-of-seven 3-point attempts.
- Finished seven-of-nine from the free throw line.
Around the League
- Albany claimed its fourth-straight Albany Cup with a 69-42 win over Siena.
- Stony Brook won its first season-opener since 2010, beating NJIT 50-44.
- UMass Lowell and Providence combined for 183 points in the River Hawks’ first game at the Division I level. The 183 points were just eight shy of the America East record of 191 set in 1997.
