CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Albany and
Boston U both came away with wins on Saturday to improve to 2-0 and sit atop
the America East standings through two days of conference play. Road teams went
3-1 on Saturday, as UMBC was the only home team to win.
Boston U (12-3, 2-0) came away with a 45-39 victory over Hartford (9-6, 0-2)
in a defensive battle at Chase Family Arena. The Terriers won their
ninth-straight game behind a career effort from Rashidat Agboola, who had 26
points in the victory. Both teams struggled from the field as Boston U
converted 35.4 percent while Hartford shot just 30.6 percent. Agboola had 16 of
her points in the second half. Hartford came within four at 42-38 with under
four minutes to play, but the Terrier defense clamped down and did not allow
another field goal to seal the win.
Albany (11-3, 2-0) also improved to 2-0 in league play with a 72-47 win over
Binghamton (2-13, 1-1). The Great Danes have won two conference games by an
average of 39.5 points per game. Trailing 16-14 in the first half, Albany
outscored the Bearcats 18-7 over the final nine minutes to take control of the
game with a 32-23 lead at the break. Shereesha Richards led the Great Danes
with a game-high 18 points. The Great Danes shot 40-percent from the floor and
held a 47-25 rebounding advantage.
UMBC (5-10, 1-1) held off a second-half comeback from Maine (1-13, 0-1) with
clutch free-throw shooting down the stretch to grab its first conference win,
54-50, over the Black Bears. Maine battled back from a double-digit deficit
with a 19-8 run to start the second half and tie the game at 30. The Black
Bears trailed by just two at 52-50 with six second left, but Raven Harris hit
2-of-2 from the charity stripe to clinch the win. UMBC shot a season-best
14-of-17 from the free throw line including 8-of-9 in the second half. Bria
White led the Retrievers with 15 points, scoring 14 in the second half.
Stony Brook (9-6, 1-1) overcame an 11-point first half deficit to top New
Hampshire (5-9, 0-2), 48-44. The Seawolves used swarming defense to hold the
Wildcats scoreless for the first six-plus minutes of the second half to claim a
31-28 lead. With the game tied a 41 late, Chikilra Goodman slashed to the hoop
for two and Brittany Snow hit a jumper on the next possession to put the
Seawolves up four. After the Wildcats closed to within one, Goodman hit a
mid-range jumper and converted on a free throw to give Stony Brook the win.
Goodman led Stony Brook with 17 points.
