CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Senior Sa’sha Kershaw scored a pair of game-winning goals to lead Stony Brook University to a 2-0 week, earning her America East women’s soccer Player of the Week honors, the conference office announced Monday.
Joining Kershaw as a weekly award winner is University of Maine freshman Lauren Swant, who was named Rookie of the Week for her efforts in goal and helping the Black Bears to a 1-0-1 mark.
Kershaw (Baltimore, Md.) earned her first career America East Player of the Week award after tallying five points, scoring two goals and dishing out one assist in an undefeated week for the Seawolves. On Friday vs. Manhattan, Kershaw broke a scoreless tie in the 86th minute to give Stony Brook a 1-0 victory and head coach Sue Ryan her 200th career win. Then on Sunday against Lehigh, Kershaw scored the game-winner once again in the 46th minute as Stony Brook topped the Mountain Hawks, 3-1. She also assisted on the first goal of the match to give her five points for the weekend.
Swant (Oakville, Ontario) also earned her second career America East honor after allowing just one goal in 200 minutes of play in a 1-0-1 weekend for the Black Bears. The freshman shut out Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference favorite Fairfield while making three saves in a 0-0 tie on Friday night. Swant followed that with three more saves in a, 2-1, win at Rhode Island on Sunday afternoon. She finished with six saves and an .857 save percentage for the weekend.
