CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- In the midst of one of the most impressive stretches of any women's soccer player in the nation, University's at Albany's Shayla Bergeron has been named America East Player of the Week. She has six goals and a pair of assists in her last four games.
Joining Bergeron as a weekly award winner is University of New Hampshire's Kirstyn Corder, who tallied three points in two games last week. The award honorees for the week ending Sept. 9 were announced Monday afternoon.
Bergeron (Hudson, N.H.) tallied eight points over three games last week in which the Great Danes went 2-1 to earn her second career America East Player of the Week honor. The senior forward, who also earned the award on Sept. 7, 2010, scored twice, including the game winner, and added an assist in Albany's 4-3 win over Canisius on Friday. Bergeron, a 2010 all-conference selection, then scored the first goal ('40) in Sunday's 5-2 win over Cornell and set up Maggie DeVerna for what proved to be the game winner ('68). Her feats also got her named to the Top Drawer Soccer National Team of the Week.
Corder (Overland Park, Kan.) continued her strong start as a collegian as she contributed on both goals in the Wildcats' 2-2 tie against Rhode Island on Friday and earned Rookie of the Week accolades as a result. The freshman midfielder scored UNH's first goal, which came in the 18th minute, and then set up the game-tying score with just 1:42 left in regulation.
