CAMBRIDGE, Mass.
-- The 2012 women's soccer season began for six America East teams over the
weekend and a pair of standout performers are the conference's first weekly
award winners of the year.
Boston University's Brea Hewitt totaled five points in a
pair of wins to earn Player of the Week honors while Stony Brook's Aley
Leonardi scored her first career goal to garner Rookie of the Week accolades.
The award recipients for the week ending Aug. 19 were announced Monday
afternoon.
Hewitt (Ashburn, Va.) helped the 23rd-ranked Terriers get
off to a good start in 2012 as she scored twice and added an assist in a pair
of 3-0 wins over Central Connecticut State and Northeastern, respectively. The
senior midfielder gave her team a 1-0 lead in the 30th minute Friday against
the Blue Devils by sending home a corner kick off a rebound. She then made the
score 3-0 in the 77th minute as she finished a cross from Megan McGoldrick to
complete her first career multi-goal game. Hewitt, whose five points were more
than her previous career total (4 in 36 games), capped her week by setting up
Jamie Turchi's goal in the 75th minute of the Terriers' win over the Huskies
Sunday.
Leonardi (Kennebunkport, Maine) got her career off to a good
start as her goal in the 69th minute against Temple tied the score and helped
stony Brook earn a 1-1 draw. The freshman forward took a feed from Caitlin
Pfeiffer cross and sent it home from the top of the 18-yard box for her first
collegiate goal.
