SEACAUCUS, N.J. -- America East's historic baseball week continued as the 2012 Major League Baseball Player Draft concluded Wednesday and saw a league-record 12 players selected, including one in the first round, three in the first five and seven in the top 12.
Already flying high after his team advanced to the NCAA Super Regionals on Monday, Stony Brook's Travis Jankowski was a first-round sandwich selection, 44th overall, by the San Diego Padres on Monday night. Jankowski, the America East Player of the Year, is the league's highest selection since Carlos Pena went 10th overall in 1998.
The junior outfielder is in the midst of an incredible season as he's
batting .417, which ranks among the nation's best, on 101 hits,
including five homers, 17 doubles and 10 triples. He has scored 75 runs,
driven in 46 and stolen 36 bases in 61 games.
Six more America East baseball players went in the next 11 rounds of the draft on Tuesday, including four of Jankowski's teammates.
The Texas Rangers selected Stony Brook catcher Pat Cantwell with the 123rd overall pick in the third round, and 34-round improvement from last year when he was a 37th round selection.
Binghamton right-handed pitcher Mike Augliera became the Bearcats' highest draft pick ever when the Boston Red Sox called his name in the fifth round as the 181st overall pick.
Maine hurlerJeffrey Gibbs went to the Diamondbacks with the 303rd pick in the ninth round, while Seawolves second baseman Maxx Tissenbaum (11th; 345th; Padres), infielder and designated hitter William Carmona (11th; 368th; Phillies) and relief pitcher James Campbell (12th; 386th; Dodgers) rounded out America East's day two picks.
Day three of the draft saw five more America East standouts get selected.
Two of next league's next three selections went to the Chicago Cubs, who took Maine right-hander Steve Perakslis with the 644th pick in the 21st round and Stony Brook pitcher Jasvir Rakkar with the 794th selection in the 26th round. Albany left-hander Sean Lucas went in between to the Cincinnati Reds with the 772nd pick in the 25th round.
The conference's last two picks both went to the Oakland A's, with Binghamton right-hander Lee Sosa (26th; 772nd) and Stony Brook's Tyler Johnson, the America East Pitcher of the Year, (33rd, 1,009th) both getting chosen.
Overall, Stony Brook led the way with seven selections, while Binghamton and Maine each had two and Albany had one. The Seawolves' seven picks will try keep its incredible season going and reach the College World Series as they face LSU in Super Regional action in a best-of-three series beginning Friday in Baton Rouge.
