EUGENE, Ore. – America East track
and field will be well represented today at the U.S. Track and Field
Olympic Trials. Two former Binghamton Bearcats will be in action while a Boston University Terrier also seeks Olympic qualification.
Four-time All-American and one of Binghamton's most storied Division I student-athletes, Erik van Ingen will compete in the men's 1,500-meter semifinals (7:20 ET; 4:20 PT). van Ingen qualified for the Olympic Trials with his performance at the Virginia Classic running a 3:38.06 and will need to post a top-24 time today in order to qualify for Friday's semifinal heats. London-bound qualifiers in the 1,500 will be determined on Sunday, July 1.
Fellow Binghamton standout and the 2008 NCAA indoor pole vault champion Rory Quiller advanced to today's event finals by clearing 5.30 meters on Monday. A three-time All-American, Quiller needs to finish in the top-three to punch his ticket to London. The pole vault finals begin at 8:05 ET (5:05 PT).
On the women's side, Boston University's Allison Barwise makes her first trip to the Olympic Trials and will compete in the high jump. A two-time All-American just this year, Barwise qualified for the event by clearing 1.87 meters at the ECAC Championship back in May. The Terrier senior begins competition at 8:00 ET (5:00 PT) aiming to advance to Saturday's final.
Fellow Terrier Katie Matthews competed last week in the 10,000-meter run completing the race in 33:45.22 finishing 22nd overall.
2012 Stony Brook graduate Lucy Van Dalen qualified for the London Olympics last week for her native New Zealand in the 1,500-meter run. Van Dalen ran a personal-best 4:05.76 at the Summer Nights Track & Field Series at San Diego's Mesa College to meet the country's 'A' standard. That time represents the second-fastest time in New Zealand history.
