University of Maine standout runner Corey Conner has been named to the Capital One Women's Cross Country and Track Academic All-America squad for the second straight season, the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced on Friday. Conner, a third-team choice last year, is a second-team selection this year.
Conner, a senior cross country and track & field standout, earned second-team All-America honors this year by placing 16th in the 5,000 at the 2012 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. She also received All-America recognition in 2011, placing 15th in the 5,000 at the NCAA Indoor Championships. A multi-time All-Conference honoree, Connor was also the 2009 America East cross country champion.
In the classroom, Conner earned a 3.82 GPA in nursing during her tenure at Maine. She received numerous academic honors, including several America East All-Academic team citations, a gold medallion Maine Scholar-Athlete award and the Maine 'M' Club Dean Smith Award, which is given to the top female student‐athlete at Maine.
Conner is America East's fourth Capital One Academic All-American this year. She joins University at Albany's Logan Aronhalt (men's basketball), University of Hartford's Simon Kudernatsch (baseball) and Tyler Johnson (baseball) as 2011-12 selections.
To be eligible for Academic All-America® consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director.
