OMAHA, Neb. -- The Stony Brook Seawolves' historic season came to an end Sunday evening at TD Ameritrade Park with a 12-2 loss to No. 3 National seed Florida State in the College World Series.
Stony Brook finished with a conference-record 52-15 mark and became the first America East team to win an NCAA Super Regional when it took two out of three from LSU at Alex Box Stadium the previous weekend.
After pushing across one run in the first inning on a walk, single and fielder's choice, Florida State exploded for six runs in the top of the third off Stony Brook starting pitcher Brandon McNitt. The Seawolves retired the first two Seminoles batters, but then gave up three straight hits, two singles and a double, to plate a run. A throwing error by shortstop Cole Peragine on the next batter extended the inning, which included a three-run home run by Justin Gonzalez before McNitt induced a 4-3 groundout to end the inning.
Stony Brook, looking to counter, led off the bottom half of the third inning with a SalIntagliata single up the middle. After two flyouts, Willie Carmona lasered a ball to deep centerfield which bounced into the bleachers for a ground rule double, holding Intagliata at third. Maxx Tissenbaum ended the inning with a sharp liner to shortstop caught in the air near the ground.
McNitt walked John Holland to start the fourth and retired the next two batters by way of flyouts. Devon Travis sent a pitch into the Stony Brook bullpen to clear the bases and give Florida State a 9-0 lead which knocked McNitt out of the game in favor of James Campbell. Campbell struck out ACC Player of the Year James Ramsey to end the Seminoles threat.
McNitt finished with nine runs against, four earned, on six hits and three walks in 3.2 innings.
Both of the Seawolves' two runs came in the bottom half of the fifth frame beginning with a Kevin Courtney double. Two batters later, Travis Jankowski singled to center field and Courtney scored when the center fielder's throw went errant rolling towards the Florida State dugout along the first base side. Cantwell grounded out to second, but Carmona followed up with his second hit of the day, an RBI single to right field which scored Jankowski from third.
The Stony Brook fifth was too little, too late though, as the Seminoles tacked on three more runs in the top of the sixth inning on a walk and three hits.
Campbell went 1.2 innings allowing three runs. Josh Mason and Frankie Vanderka combined to pitched the final 3.2 innings of shutout baseball.
Florida State freshman starting pitcher Mike Compton went 6.0 innings and allowed six hits, two earned runs, two walks and struck out four Seawolves. Brandon Johnson, Bryant Holtmann and Mack Waugh each pitched an inning to close out the game for the Seminoles.
