OMAHA, Neb. -- The 2011 and 2012 America East Coach of the Year Matt Senk of Stony Brook University added a National Coach of the Year award to his resume Friday morning. As announced at a press conference at the TD Ameritrade Stadium, home of the College World Series, the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association honored Senk with the 2012 NCBWA Coach of the Year Award.
Senk is the first America East baseball coach to earn national coaching honors after guiding the Seawolves to an historic season in
2012.
Senk is in his 22nd year at the helm of Stony Brook and has led the Seawolves from Division III, Division II and finally Division I in 2000. None of his previous 21 years has been as spectacular as the 2012 season has been.
Senk and the Seawolves currently sit with a 52-13 record, the best record in the nation, while also having the best winning percentage over the last two seasons. His team won the program's first-ever NCAA Regional, Super Regional and is preparing to face No. 2 seed UCLA Friday night at 5 ET for game one of the College World Series in Omaha, Neb.
The Seawolves are the first Northeast team to appear in the College World Series since Maine in 1986 and will vie to become the first Northeast team to win the National Championship since Holy Cross in 1952.
Seven Seawolves were drafted in the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft earlier this month, a single-season high for the program and for the league. Center fielder Travis Jankowski was the 44th overall pick and became Stony Brook's only first-round draft pick.
Senk is assisted by Joe Pennucci, Mike Marron and Dave Lorber.
The NCBWA membership includes writers, broadcasters and publicists. Designed to promote and publicize college baseball, it is the sports' only college media-related organization, founded in 1962.
