Seven
America East student-athletes collected Capital One Academic All-District honors,
the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced recently.
Five received All-District recognition in Track/Cross Country while a tennis
player and swimmer both were At-Large picks. All seven selections earned
first-team status making them eligible for Academic All-America consideration.
In
track and cross country, Maine’s Corey Conner, Stony Brook’s Lucy Van Dalen and
Vermont’s Morgan Powers were conference selections in District I. For the men,
Binghamton seniors Adam Quinn and Robb Quiller were also District I honorees.
UMBC’s
Joe Adewumi (tennis) and Maine’s Robbie Bickford (swimming) were the two At-Large
selections.
Conner
returned to competition this spring for the Black Bears. The senior nursing
major with a 3.70 GPA, will compete at the NCAA Championship next weekend in
the 5,000-meter run coming off a conference title in the same event. A 2010and
2012 Outdoor Track and Field All-Academic selection, Conner was named to the
2009 and 2010 Cross Country All-Academic Teams as well as the 2010 and 2011
Indoor Track and Field All-Academic squads.
Van
Dalen became a four-time NCAA Championship qualifier in the 1,500-meter run
last weekend and earns her second straight All-District honor. The National Champion
in the indoor mile, Van Dalen was recently named a finalist for the America
East Woman of the Year Award and a member of the 2012 Outdoor Track and Field
All-Academic Team for the fourth time. A senior from New Zealand, Van Dalen
pursued her master’s degree in sociology this year and owns a 4.00 GPA.
Powers,
an All-Academic selection in cross country, indoor and outdoor track and field
this year, rounds out the women’s selections after a standout senior year. An
All-Conference performer in all three seasons, Powers maintained a 3.97 GPA as
a dietetics, nutrition and food sciences major. Powers will compete at the NCAA
Championship meet in the 10,000-meter run next week in Des Moines, Iowa.
Binghamton’s
Quinn, the America East Indoor Track and Field Scholar Athlete, wrapped up his
career as a Bearcat in style this year. He finished as the runner-up in the
5,000-meter run at the conference indoor meet and in the 3,000-meter
steeplechase at the outdoor championship while also competing at the NCAA East
Regional meet. A five-time selection to an assortment of America East
All-Academic teams, Quinn graduated from Binghamton with a 3.78 GPA in biology.
Quiller,
also a five-time All-Academic team honoree during his career, graduated with a
3.81 GPA as an economics major. Quiller was one of six Binghamton
student-athletes to receive the 2012 SUNY Chancellor’s Scholar-Athlete Award,
awarded to him for his athletic and academic accomplishments, and won a pair of
conference titles in the pole vault in his career as a Bearcat.
UMBC’s
Adewumi, an All-Conference singles and doubles performer, was also named to the
America East All-Academic squad this year. A three-time selection to the
All-Academic team, Adewumi graduated from UMBC this year with a 3.45 GPA in
biochemistry/molecular biology.
Bickford
was one of three Black Bears to earn conference All-Academic Team status this
winter after posting a perfect 4.00 GPA as a biochemistry major in Orono.
To
be nominated, the student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with
at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) for his/her
career. No athlete is eligible until he/she has reached sophomore athletic and
academic standing at his/her current institution (thus, true freshmen,
red-shirt freshmen and ineligible transfers are not eligible). In the cases of
transfers, graduate students and junior college graduates, the athlete must
have completed one full academic year at the nominating institution to be
eligible.
CoSIDA selects Academic All-America teams in 12 programs: football, women's
volleyball, men's soccer, women's soccer, men's basketball, women's basketball,
baseball, softball, men's track & field/cross country, women's track &
field/cross country, men's at-large and women's at-large. A first team, second
team and third team are selected in both the University (Division I and I-AA)
and College (Division II, III and NAIA) Divisions. Football consists of just
first and second teams.
