BALTIMORE -- Stony Brook will make its second NCAA appearance in three years when it takes on seventh-ranked and second-seeded Johns Hopkins on Sunday at 3 p.m. at Homewood Field. The game will be televised nationally on ESPNU. The game will also be available on ESPN3 and WatchESPN apps for smartphones and tablets.
Stony Brook, winner of three straight and six of its last eight, beat
Albany, 14-8, to claim its second America East title in three years on
May 5. The Seawolves, who were led by Jeff Tundo's four scores, scored
seven straight goals in the second half to seal the win.
Sean Brady
made 11 saves and was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player.
He was joined by teammates Tundo, JJ LaForet and Kyle Moeller on the
All-Championship team.
SBU placed a league-best five players on the
all-conference first team and also had the Rookie of the Year (Mike
Rooney) and Coach of the Year (Jim Nagle).
The Seawolves will try to become the fourth America East team have reached the NCAA quarterfinals since 2007. Albany and UMBC reached the round of eight in 2007 with wins over Loyola and Maryland, respectively. Stony Brook joined the group with a victory over Denver in 2010.
Overall, America East teams are 8-19 all-time in the NCAA tournament and 0-1 against Johns Hopkins. Hofstra fell to the Blue Jays in the second round of the 1999 tournament.
Stony Brook is making its third NCAA appearance overall and is 1-2 in the tournament. In 2010, the Seawolves beat Denver before losing a heartbreaker to eventual national champion Virginia in the quarterfinals.
