Undefeated Seawolves, Terriers Take Home Awards

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.-- The only two teams still unbeaten in league play, Stony Brook, who entered the DeBeer/Inside Lacrosse Media Poll at No. 19 earlier today, and Boston U., take home all three America East weekly women's lacrosse awards for the period ending April 8. Seawolves Janine Hillier (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) and Frankie Caridi (East Northport, N.Y./Commack) earn Player and Defensive Player of the Week honors, respectively, and Boston U. freshman attacker Mallory Collins (Boston, Mass./Thayer Academy/Loomis Chaffee) picks up her fourth Rookie of the Week accolade of the season.

Hillier, a junior midfielder, led the Seawolves in points in a two-win week for Stony Brook, finishing with 10 goals and six assists in a pair of conference victories. She also tallied two ground balls, two caused turnovers and three draw controls on the week.

Against UMBC, Hillier notched all six of her goals in the second half to turn a slim 4-3 halftime lead into a 16-6 win. She scored four times and distributed five assists against Vermont for a season-best nine points.

Hillier is averaging 6.00 points and 4.00 goals per game in the three games against America East opponents.

Between the pipes in two wins for the Seawolves, Caridi, a sophomore, recorded 14 saves with a .424 save percentage and a 9.50 goals against average along with four ground balls and four caused turnovers.

Against UMBC, Caridi stopped nine of 15 shots on goal and caused two turnovers. She followed that performance with five saves and two caused turnovers against the conference's top offense in Vermont.

Caridi owns a 7.24 goals against average and .449 save percentage this season.

Collins, who ranks fourth in America East with 3.17 goals per game as a freshman, continued her impressive campaign with nine goals and 11 points in two Terrier wins last week.

Collins matched a career high with five goals and one assist for six points in a second-half comeback victory over Albany on Saturday.  She also chipped in two ground balls. Earlier in the week, Collins recorded five points on four goals and an assist against New Hampshire.

Albany (8-4, 1-2 AE) split its conference games last week, defeating Binghamton 10-3 on Wednesday and losing in the second half to Boston U. 16-11... The Great Danes fall to a three-way tie for fourth in the standings with Vermont and New Hampshire with three games remaining... Jess Antelmi (Bridgeport, N.Y./Chittenango) tallied four points (2 goals, 2 assists) in the Binghamton win and two points (1 goal, 1 assist) in the loss against Boston U. Antelmi has now scored a goal in 10-straight games... Anna Berman (Garnerville, N.Y./North Rockland) had a stellar performance in net against Binghamton, saving four shots and allowing just three goals... Berman followed up with a tough start against Boston U. allowing 15 goals on 21 shots, 10 of which came in the second half... Albany looks ahead to Saturday, April 14 with its contest in Durham, N.H. against New Hampshire at 1 p.m.

Binghamton (3-8, 0-4 AE) dropped a pair of conference games last week, falling to Albany on the road 10-3 and then coming up short against visiting UMBC 10-9... Junior Kristen Stone (Clarence Center, N.Y./Clarence) led the Bearcats with four goals, two in each game while classmate Kimberly McGeever (Northport, N.Y./Northport) had a productive week netting three goals and dishing out three assists. She now has 24 assists which ranks fourth in the conference... Against Albany, the Bearcats evened the game at one early on, but a 4-0 run by the Great Danes broke open the game... A stingy Albany defense held the Bearcats to just three second-half shots limiting a Binghamton offense that typically scores 10.82 goals per game... Versus UMBC, Binghamton fell behind 8-3 before netting two goals in the final minute of the first half... The Bearcats utilized a 4-0 second half run to forge ahead, taking a 9-8 lead at the 9:02 mark... However, the Retrievers scored a pair of goals just ten seconds apart to regain the lead with 5:38 to play... UMBC was able to maintain possession and run the clock out following a Binghamton turnover... The Bearcats will take a break from conference play when they host Patriot League member Bucknell on Saturday, April 14 at 4 p.m.

Boston U. (8-4, 4-0 AE) extended its win streak to seven games and its conference win streak to four games... The Terriers outscored Albany 12-2 in the second half to erase a 9-4 halftime deficit and win 16-11... It is the second time this season that Boston U. has erased a five-goal or more second-half deficit to win a game... Boston U. also turned that trick at UMBC on March 31, erasing an 11-4 second-half deficit... The Terriers have not lost a road game since March 7... Freshman Mallory Collins (Boston, Mass./Thayer Academy/Loomis Chaffee), junior Danielle Etrasco (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) and junior Kristen Mogavero (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) have each scored a goal in every game they have appeared in this season... Senior Annie Stookesberry (Denver, Colo./Kent Denver) and sophomore Sydney Godett (Boxford, Mass./Masconomet Regional) each had four ground balls and five draw controls this week... Godett has controlled at least two draws in each of the last three games... Boston U. outscored its two opponents this week 20-8 in the second half... This Wednesday's game against Boston College is the Terriers' Breast Cancer Awareness Game.

UMBC (5-7, 2-2 AE) split a pair of road games this week, falling at Stony Brook 16-6 on Wednesday, before traveling back to New York less than 48 hours later and defeating Binghamton 10-9... Seniors Alicia Krause (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron) and Emily Coady (Westminster, Md./Westminster) scored goals 11 seconds apart late in the second half as the visiting Retrievers edged upset-minded Binghamton... Krause and Coady led a balanced UMBC attack with two goals and one assist each... Sophomore midfielder Taeler Errington (Valley Lee, Md./Leonardtown) added two goals and classmate Shannon Harkey (Purcellville, Va.) contributed a goal and a helper... The Retrievers won a one-goal decision over the Bearcats for the second consecutive season and have won all nine meetings between the two teams... Krause has 20 goals in 2012 and needs one more to score 100 goals in her collegiate career... UMBC trailed Stony Brook just 4-3 at halftime, but SBU broke open the game with a 5-1 run to open the second half and tacked on five late goals... Junior midfielder Lindsay Cox (High Bridge, N.J./Voorhees) led the visitors with two goals and one assist and Errington had a pair of goals... It was SBU's first-ever win over UMBC in nine tries... UMBC is +13 in goals scored in the first half this season, but -22 in the second half... The Retrievers welcome Vermont to UMBC Stadium in a key league game on April 14... UMBC edged the Catamounts 14-13 in Burlington last season. Krause had four goals and a helper to lead UMBC.

UNH (3-8, 1-2 AE) concluded a stretch of three consecutive road games with losses at Boston U. (13-8) and Lehigh (11-8)… The Wildcats recorded the ground ball advantage in both games (20-16 at Boston U.; 20-15 at Lehigh)… Senior midfielder and captain Ilana Cohen (Andover, Mass./Andover) recorded her 100th career point with the second of her three points – an assist at 14:55 of the second half – at Boston U. on April 4. Cohen has 16 points (7g, 9a) during her five-game point-scoring streak... Laura Puccia (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) has 19 points (15g, 4a) during her five-game goal-scoring streak. Puccia has a team-high 21 goals and is tied for the lead in points (26) with Cohen… Cohen and Casey Doyle (Ivyland, Pa.), a junior defender and captain, are the only two Wildcats to start all 11 games this season… Kate Keagins (Bay Shore, N.Y./Bay Shore) extended her goal-scoring streak to 14 games and point-scoring streak to 16 with a one-goal, one-assist performance at Boston U. and a goal at Lehigh… Amber Casiano (South Windsor, Conn.) recorded a career-high five ground balls at Lehigh… Each of the last three games have been tied at 6, but the opponent went on a decisive run all three times to defeat UNH; UVM scored 10 consecutive goals, Boston U. went on a 4-0 run and, most recently, Lehigh netted five straight goals… UNH is winless (0-7) when scoring in single digits, and the Wildcats are 1-7 when allowing double digits.

#19 Stony Brook (10-3, 3-0 AE) won a pair of conference matches last week, defeating UMBC 16-6 and Vermont 21-13, to stretch its winning streak to five games...The Seawolves have won 10 games for just the second time in program history... The win over UMBC was the program's first vs. the Retrievers... The 21 goals scored vs. Vermont were a season high... SBU is 3-0 in conference play for just the second time ever, matching the 2007 team that went on to win the regular season championship... Janine Hillier (Farmingdale, N.Y.) led SBU with 10 goals and six assists last week. Her six second-half goals vs. UMBC fueled a rally as the Seawolves turned a slim 4-3 halftime lead into a 16-6 victory. She then had four goals and five assists for a season-high nine points vs. Vermont. Hillier is second on the team in goals (36) and assists (14)... Three SBU single-season records fell last week. Demmianne Cook (Nesconset, N.Y.) set a new goals record, surpassing the previous mark of 47. She scored seven goals last week and controlled 15 draws. She now has 51 goals for the season. Claire Petersen (Wantagh, N.Y.) is the new record holder for single-season assists and points, which she broke on the same assist against Vermont. She now has 43 assists and 74 points on the year after posting 10 goals and five assists last week... Stony Brook will host Yale Wednesday before heading up to Boston U. for a first-place showdown on Saturday.

Vermont (8-5, 1-2 AE) went 0-2 on the week, dropping a 15-9 decision at No. 20 Boston College and falling 21-13 at Stony Brook... Sophomore Marcie Marino (Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry) finished the week with seven goals, including five versus the Seawolves... Classmate Sydney Mas (Bedford, N.Y./St. George's School (R.I.)) added six points on the week with four goals and two assists... Mas and teammate Samantha Stern (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill East) inched closer to the 100-career goal mark and each player begins the week with 97 goals... Vermont takes on California on April 12 at 5 p.m. at Virtue Field and travels to UMBC April 14 for a noon game.
