Petersen Leads Seawolves To Upset Over #20 Hopkins

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.-- For the third straight week, a member of the undefeated Stony Brook women's lacrosse team takes home the America East Player of the Week. Junior attacker Claire Petersen (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) garners the award for her part in the biggest win in program history. A pair of Terriers in Boston U. sophomore Christina Sheridan (Ellicott City, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel) and freshman attacker Mallory Collins (Boston, Mass./Thayer Academy/Loomis Chaffee) take home the Defensive Player and Rookie of the Week, respectively.

Petersen lifted the Seawolves to a 15-14 victory over Johns Hopkins, the program's first ever win over a nationally-ranked foe. The junior attacker finished with nine points on six goals and three assists, and collected three ground balls and a draw control. She scored the game-winning goal with nine seconds left in regulation. She also led a comeback from being down three goals by scoring four of her six goals after Stony Brook trailed 10-7.

Sheridan manned the goal in Boston U.'s first victory of the season, a 16-8 win over George Mason. She stopped a season-high 10 shots for a .555 save percentage, and also caused a turnover. Sheridan leads the league with a .458 save percentage, making 27 saves and allowing 32 goals in three games. She also leads the conference with 9.00 saves per game.

Collins led the Terriers to their first win of the season with a six-point afternoon at George Mason. The rookie scored five goals and assisted on one other to play a hand in six of the team's 16 goals. Collins is fifth in America East this season with 3.33 goals per game and 10th with 3.67 points per game.

Albany (2-1, 0-0 AE) unleashed a 10-minute six-goal run beginning at the 22:05 mark in the second stanza en route to a 12-10 victory over Marist on Saturday... Allie Phelan (Clarksville, N.Y./Bethlehem Central) took advantage of a free position opportunity to start the offensive run for the Great Danes... Freshman Nichole Eamer (Watertown, N.Y./General Brown) contributed two goals in the span... In the first half the teams went goal-for-goal to knot it up at 6 going into halftime... Ariana Parker (Port Ewen, N.Y./Kingston) tallied four first-half goals to keep Albany in the game and notched her 11th on the season in the second half... The Great Danes will complete a five-game road trip this weekend with games at Siena and George Mason.

Binghamton (0-2, 0-0 AE) dropped its second straight home contest to Connecticut over the weekend 14-12... Binghamton fell behind early, 4-0 but rallied to get within three by halftime, 8-5... The Huskies would push their lead back to five early in the second half but a Binghamton 3-0 run trimmed the deficit two... The two teams traded goals before another 3-0 Bearcat spurt evened the game at 12... However, UConn would answer with a quick strike after controlling the draw to go up one with just over three minutes to play... The Bearcats had one last chance with 1:30 to play but turned the ball over inside the fan and the Huskies were able to run out the clock, adding a goal with eight seconds to go... Senior Lis Zuern (Cicero, NY/Ciecro-North Syracuse) led the Bearcats with five goals and two assists for a career-high seven points... Binghamton has two road games this week first heading to Marist on Wed. March 7 and then playing at Canisius On Fri. March 9.

The Terriers (1-2, 0-0 AE) earned their first win of the season and third straight triumph over George Mason. Wednesday's game against Yale was postponed due to inclement weather and was rescheduled for March 21. Danielle Etrasco has scored five goals in two of her three games this year. Etrasco and Mallory Collins have combined for 16 of the Terriers' last 25 goals.

Visiting Duquesne overcame a two-goal halftime deficit, and outscored UMBC, 6-1, in the second half to capture an 11-8 victory over the Retrievers (1-3, 0-0 AE) at UMBC Stadium.... Senior midfielder Alicia Krause (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron) led UMBC with three goals and one assist against her former team... Junior middie Lindsay Cox (High Bridge, N.J./Voorhees) scored once and added three assists... The game featured two big runs by Duquesne, countered by one for the Retrievers... The Dukes broke an early 1-1 tie with a 4-0 surge and led 5-1 at the 17:20 mark of the first half... The Retrievers countered, tying the game with four goals in a span of 1:53 to draw even on the second of back-to-back scores by Krause with 12:30 remaining in the half... Goals by sophomore Taeler Errington (Valley Lee, Md./Leonardtown) and Cox completed a 6-0 run and gave the hosts momentum and a 7-5 halftime advantage... But after a quick exchange of scores early in the second half, the Dukes re-established control and held UMBC scoreless for the final 23:37... Sophomore midfielder Kristin Bilney (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron) added two goals for UMBC... The Retrievers travel to Delaware to take on the Blue Hens on Wednesday and then face Loyola on the road on Sunday.

UNH (0-2, 0-0 AE) was defeated 17-5 by UMass during a Leap Year Day snowstorm at McGuirk Alumni Stadium… UNH trailed 3-2 before the Minutewomen closed the first half with five unanswered goals and opened the second half with five consecutive goals for a 10-0 spurt… All 11 of the Wildcats’ shots were on goal… UNH scored on two of its three second-half shots… Kate Keagins (Bay Shore, N.Y./Bay Shore) recorded impressive across-the-board numbers with one goal, four ground balls, four draw controls and three caused turnovers… Jenny Simpson (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) increased her goal-scoring streak to 10 games with a two-goal effort at UMass… Keagins, Simpson and Laura Puccia (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) are the three Wildcats who have tallied a point in both of UNH’s games this season… Rachael Nock (Severna Park, Md./Severn School) recorded her first career point with an assist at UMass… New Hampshire returns to action March 7 at home against UConn; the Wildcats have a 5-3 record vs. the Huskies; these programs met annually from 2003-09.

Stony Brook (5-0, 0-0 AE) knocked off No. 20/17 Johns Hopkins 15-14 for the program's first-ever win over a nationally ranked opponent... It also makes the Seawolves 5-0 for the first time in program history... The Seawolves won the game on junior Claire Petersen's (Wantagh, N.Y.) goal on a free position attempt with just nine seconds remaining in regulation... It was part of a six-goal, three-assist day for Petersen, who matches her own shared Seawolves single-game record for points with nine... She and teammate Demmianne Cook (Nesconset, N.Y.) both have reached nine points in a game earlier this season... Petersen is averaging 8.3 points per game this year... Cook scored three goals on the afternoon and now has a team-best 25 this season, averaging five per game... Freshman Michelle Rubino (East Setauket, N.Y.) had three points, six draw controls and one caused turnover on the day...Five of her six draw controls led to Seawolves goals on that very possession and her caused turnover led to a Petersen goal that started the Seawolves comeback...She is averaging 7.6 draw controls per game... Junior goalkeeper Hannah Perruccio (Rochester, N.Y.) earned her first collegiate victory after making two saves in 50 minutes... Stony Brook hosts No. 5/3 Duke Monday afternoon, the second of four straight games against nationally ranked teams.

Vermont (3-0, 0-0 AE) is off to its best start since 2006... The Catamounts picked up a 16-8 win over Siena and a 19-9 victory at Davidson this week... Senior Samantha Stern (Cherry Hills, N.J./Cherry Hill East) led the Catamounts with 12 points in the two games on five goals and seven assists... She leads UVM in scoring with 23 points and has 13 assists in 2012 alone after totaling 10 assists in the past two seasons combined... Sophomore Sydney Mas (Bedford, N.Y/St. George's School) netted five goals on the week and senior Adison Rounds (Centennial, Colo./Arapahoe) scored a career-high five goals in the win over Davidson... Goalkeeper Laura Barber (Middlebury, Vt./Middlebury) collected 12 saves and posted a 8.12 goals against average on the week... Vermont closes out its trip to North Carolina for spring break with a noon game at High Point on Wednesday (March 7) and returns home to host UMass on Saturday (March 10) at 1 p.m. at Virtue Field.
