CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- Strong performances by Hartford's Scott Bement and Stony Brook's Mike Rooney have earned the duo America East's men's lacrosse weekly honors. Bement was stellar in net for the Hawks in a pair of games and earned Player of the Week accolades, while Rooney picked up Rookie of the Week recognition for the second time in four weeks. The accolades for the for the final full week of non-conference play were announced Monday afternoon.
Bement (Canandaigua, N.Y.) made 23 saves, 66 percent of the shots he faced, and compiled a 6.96 goals-against average in leading the Hawks to a 1-1 week. The senior goalkeeper who earned first-team All-America East honors last season, stopped 13 of the 23 shots he faced in a narrow 11-10 loss at Sacred Heart Wednesday. Bement then made 10 saves and allowed just two goals in a 24-4 win over Wagner on Saturday.
Rooney (East Islip, N.Y.) racked up seven points on five goals and two assists in a pair of games, both one-goal losses, last week. The redshirt-freshman midfielder had two goals and and an assist in the Seawolves' 12-11 defeat to Siena Tuesday. He then had a season-high four points, including his third hat trick of the year, in a 10-9 loss to Bryant Saturday. Rooney leads Stony Brook and is tied for sixth among league leaders with 14 goals.
League play gets underway this weekend with three games Saturday. Binghamton will host Albany while Vermont will visit Stony Brook. Both of those contests start at 1 p.m. Rounding out the action, reigning champion Hartford will visit UMBC for a 7 p.m. game.

Albany (0-7) fell to #20 Bucknell, 15-7, in non-conference action on Saturday, in the Great Danes' only game of the week ... Miles Thompson (Onondaga Nation, N.Y./LaFayette) and Joe Resetarits (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg) each scored two goals apiece in the game ... Thompson also finished with three assists for a five-point game ... UAlbany out-shot Bucknell, 31-30, in the game, as both Thompson and Resetarits had seven shots each ... Freshman Max Huber (Long Grove, Ill./Adali E. Stevenson) made his first start in the goal for the Great Danes, playing all 60 minutes and made nine saves ... UAlbany will kick off America East Conference play on Saturday, hosting Binghamton at 1 p.m. on John Fallon Field.
Binghamton (2-5) dropped its second consecutive road game to Quinnipiac 12-11 this past Saturday afternoon ... After trailing by five early on in the first half, the Bearcats charged back to take a 10-9 lead with just over 10 minutes remaining ... After Quinnipiac answered with a pair of goals, freshman Paul O'Donnell (Skaneateles, N.Y./Skaneateles) tied the game up at 11 with just over a minute left ... The home team quickly responded winning the face-off and netted the game-winner with just 40 seconds remaining, giving Binghamton its second straight defeat by just a goal ... Freshman J.T. Hauck (Webster, N.Y./Webster-Thomas) scored a career-high two goals and added a career-high tying three assists on the afternoon ... Both Tyler Perrelle (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) and Michael Antinozzi (Fallston, Md./Fallston) added two goals and an assist from the midfield position ... Perrelle has recorded a point in 14 straight games, while Antinozzi has registered two goals or more in nine straight contests ... Ben Waldron (Camillus, N.Y./West Genesee) tallied a career-high two goals, to go along with an assist, six ground balls and three caused turnovers in the losing effort ... Binghamton travels to Albany, N.Y. to play in its conference opener this upcoming Saturday ... Last year Binghamton defeated the Great Danes in a tightly contested game 8-7, ensuring their first playoff berth since 2009.
Hartford (3-6) split a pair of games last week ... the Hawks suffered their third one-goal setback of the season at Sacred Heart, falling 10-9 on Wednesday, before rebounding for a 24-4 rout of the Wagner Seahawks in West Hartford ... the 24 tallies marked the most goals in a single game for Hartford since March 25, 2000 when it poured in 26 in a 24-goal win against Wagner ... the two teams combined for 23 penalties in the game, including 11 in the first quarter ... Hartford's penalty killing unit, which ranked ninth in NCAA Division I a week ago, continues to be impressive as Wagner converted on just 2-of-13 extra-man opportunities ... Rookie Kevin O'Shea (Dix Hills, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills West) poured in a career-high six points (2 goals, 4 assists) in the victory over the Seahawks and Andrew Cacchio (Richboro, Pa./Holy Ghost Prep), Ryan Compitello (Hauppauge, N.Y./Hauppauge) and Aidan Genik (Toronto, Ontario/Univ. of Western Ontario) each netted hat tricks to lead the Hawks to the offensive onslaught on Saturday ... Junior goalkeeper Adam Cohen (Arnold, Md./Severn) came up with a career-high 15 saves, but UMBC (2-4) could not shut down fifth-ranked Loyola and dropped a 13-5 decision at soggy UMBC Stadium ... Loyola improved to 8-0 with the victory, while UMBC fell to 2-4... It was the third consecutive contest for the Retrievers against a team ranked in the top five nationally ... UMBC and Cohen played an outstanding first quarter, taking a 3-1 lead after 15 minutes ... Senior attackman Rob Grimm (Black River, N.Y./Carthage) scored a man-up goal three minutes into the contest and junior attackman Scott Jones (Port Coquitlam, B.C./Terry Fox) scored on a man-up goal at the 10:02 mark and finished a fast break with 0.3 remaining in the quarter to give the hosts a two-goal advantage ... Cohen made six first quarter saves and turned aside his seventh early in the second quarter ... But with the score knotted at 4-4 late in the second stanza, Loyola went on a 7-0 run and held a comfortable 11-4 advantage after 45 minutes ... Grimm posted his first three-goal game of the season and the fourth of his career... Jones added two goals for UMBC, while junior attackman Joe Lustgarten (Wading River, N.Y./Wading River) had a pair of assists... Stony Brook (1-7) lost two one-goal games last week, falling at Siena, 12-11, Tuesday and at Bryant, 10-9, in double overtime Saturday ... the Seawolves are 1-4 this season in one-goal games and 1-7 in their last eight ... Stony Brook's all-time school record for one-goal decisions in a season is six (1997 and 2002) ... junior Nick Watson (Manchester, England/Rochdale LC) led the Seawolves with three goals against Siena, which outscored Stony Brook, 4-0, in the fourth quarter to win 12-11 ... Watson's goal at 10:29 of the third quarter gave the Seawolves their biggest lead in any game this season, 9-4 ... Stony Brook was outscored 8-2 after Watson's goal ... redshirt freshman Mike Rooney (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip) recorded his third hat trick of the season against Bryant, but the Bulldogs scored 35 seconds into the second overtime to defeat Stony Brook for the first time ... Vermont (1-7) dropped its only game of the week, falling to Brown at home on Saturday 14-5 … Senior Geoff Worley (Coronado, Calif./Coronado) led the Catamounts with five points on three goals and two assists, as he had a hand in all five UVM goals … Brown led 6-3 at the half and 9-5 going into the fourth quarter, before scoring the final five goals of the contest … Junior Drew Philie (Sandwich, Mass./Deerfield Academy) tallied Vermont’s other two goals and also set up one of Worley’s with an assist … Freshman Mac Hall (Baltimore, Md./St. Paul’s) also added an assist in the game for the Cats … With two assists on the day, Worley moved into sole possession of third place all-time at Vermont in the category as he now has 75 for his career … His 75 assists rank as the fourth most in the nation among active players, while Saturday was also Worley’s 52nd consecutive start which is the third longest current streak in the country … With three points in the game, Philie has now scored at least one point in 28 straight games … Vermont opens America East play on Saturday when it travels to face Stony Brook starting at 1 p.m.
