CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- For the second straight week, Binghamton's Michael Antinozzi is the America East Men's Lacrosse Player of the Week after he accounted for over half of his team's goals in a win on Saturday. Hartford's Kevin O'Shea is the Rookie of the Week for the third time already this season after he tallied seven points in two games last week. The awards for the week ending March 11 were announced Monday afternoon.
Antinozzi (Fallston, Md.) racked up a career-best five goals and an assist in Binghamton's 9-7 win over defending MAAC champion Siena on Saturday. The sophomore, who has had hat tricks in all four of his appearances this season. Antinozzi factored in on three of his team's first four goals (2G, 1A) which helped Binghamton open up a 4-0 lead it would not relinquish. He has already eclipsed his goal total from last year (14) and leads the league scoring with 4.25 points per game (17 total) and 3.75 goals per game (15 total).
O'Shea (Dix Hills, Md.) earned his third Rookie of the Week honor in four weeks by leading Hartford to a 20-6 rout over Brown on Wednesday. He had a career-best five points on three goals and two assists. The freshman attack then scored two of the Hawks' five goals in a loss to #5 UMass on Saturday. O'Shea is tied for fourth among league leaders with 14 points through five games and is fourth with 11 goals in that span.
It was an impressive week for America East teams as both UMBC and Stony Brook posted wins over ranked teams. The Retrievers updended crosstown-rival and #4 Maryland, 8-7, on Tuesday behind three points from Scott Jones. The Seawolves followed up with a 7-6 victory over #18 Delaware Saturday. Robbie Campbell had two goals and as many assists in that one.
There are eight games on this week's slate, including Stony Brook hosting St. John's on Tuesday.
Team Notes
Albany (0-5) fell to Canisius, 13-10, in the Great Danes' only game of the week ... Senior Joe Resetarits (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg) recorded his fifth straight hat trick, and the 20th of his career... He also recorded one assist in the game ... The Great Danes also got two goals each from Lyle Thompson (Onondaga Nation, N.Y./LaFayette) and Rocky Bonitatibus (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Yorktown)... It was the first goals of the season for Bonitatibus ... Will Stenberg (Needham, Mass./Needham) and Daley Baker (Cleveland Heights, Ohio/Cleveland Heights) also scored their first goals of the year ... Senior goalkeeper John Carroll (Nesconset, N.Y./Smithtown East) played the whole game, making nine saves in the cage... The Great Danes were 1-for-1 on extra-man opportunities, while holding Canisius to 0-for-6 on man-up attempts... UAlbany will return to action on Saturday, hosting Bryant at 1 p.m.
Binghamton (2-2) snapped a two-game losing streak with a 9-7 home non-conference victory over MAAC opponent Siena this past Saturday... With the victory Binghamton continues their seven-game winning streak at home, the fourth longest active streak in division I lacrosse... Sophomore Michael Antinozzi (Fallston, Md./Fallston) scored a career-high five goals and added an assist for Binghamton who now moves to .500 on the season... Antinozzi has recorded four consecutive hat tricks to start the season and has one more goal (15) than he recorded all of last season... Freshman goalie Colin Nesdale (Cheshire, Conn./Bridgton Academy) was superb in net making 13 saves in his first collegiate victory... Binghamton won 13-of-20 face-offs and completed 90 percent of their clears on the afternoon, improving their clear percentage to 89.8 percent on the season... Up next for Binghamton is an afternoon match-up with nearby Colgate University who comes in at 5-1 on the season... Binghamton upset the Red Raiders a year ago with a 7-6 road victory.
Hartford (1-4) split a pair of games this past week ... The Hawks got the week going with a convincing 20-6 victory at Brown, marking the team's first win of 2012 ... Hartford's 20 goals was the most scored in a single game since March 2, 2002 when it netted 21 against Marist ... Aidan Genik (Toronto, Ontario/Malvern C.I./Univ. of West. Ontario) and Scott Bement (Canandaigua, N.Y./Canandaigua) each enjoyed career days for the Hawks ... Genik matched a career-high of seven points, including five goals, which also ties a career-best effort, to lead Hartford in the scoring column while Bement tallied 19 saves, also matching a career-best, and allowed just five goals, a new personal-best ... Four other Hawks netted multi goal games including rookie Kevin O'Shea (Dix Hills, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills West) who notched his second career hat trick ... At #5 Massachusetts on Saturday, the Hawks suffered a 14-5 setback ... O'Shea scored two goals to lead Hartford while Bement recorded 12 saves ... The Minutemen jumped out to a 5-1 advantage in the first quarter and never relinquished that lead ... The Hawks, who have been on the road for three-straight games, return to West Hartford for two this week ... Hartford hosts Siena on Wednesday (3:30 p.m.) before taking on in-state foe Quinnipiac on Saturday (2:00 p.m.).
UMBC (2-3) scored five unanswered fourth-quarter goals and rallied to defeat No. 4 Maryland, 8-7, at UMBC Stadium on March 6... It was the Retrievers’ first victory over a top-five program since a 9-7 win over No. 5 Maryland in March of 2009... UMBC was ranked No. 10 at that time... Junior attackman Scott Jones (Port Coquitlam, B.C./Terry Fox) led UMBC with two goals and one assist, while sophomore midfielder Conor Finch (Westminster, Md./Boys' Latin) posted his first three points of the season with a goal and two helpers, all in the fourth quarter... Jones scored both the go-ahead (7th) goal and eventual (8th) game-winning goal... Sophomore midfielder Zach Linkous (Jarrettsville, Md./St. Paul's) added two goals for UMBC... Sophomore face-off specialist Phil Poe (Harwood, Md./DeMatha) controlled 15 of 19 draws in the contest against a team that entered the game at 61.4 percent... The first four games for the Retrievers this season had been decided by four or fewer goals... Three of the four have been tied at some point in the fourth quarter... Four days later, UMBC had to go up against No. 2 Johns Hopkins, and the Retrievers fell, 12-5... Prior to the 2012 season, UMBC men’s lacrosse had competed against 75 different institutions in men’s lacrosse and had a minimum of one victory against 74 of those schools... The exception was Johns Hopkins and the Blue Jays are now 10-0 vs. the Retrievers...UMBC lost its first-ever meeting with Robert Morris to start the 2012 campaign... Jones scored three fourth-quarter goals vs. the Blue Jays... It was his second hat trick of the year and the sixth of his career... He leads the Retrievers with 12 goals and 14 points through five games... Jones has scored in 11 consecutive games and has recorded 25 goals in that span... Stony Brook (1-3) upset No. 18 Delaware, 7-6, for its first win of 2012 ... of the three previous times the Seawolves started 0-3, they won the next game ... Stony Brook is 7-2 all-time against Delaware, including five straight wins in the series ... among two of the higher scoring teams in recent history, Stony Brook and Delaware did not score in double digits in the same game for the first time in the series history ... Seniors Robbie Campbell (Delta, British Columbia/Seaquam) and Kyle Belton (Langley, British Columbia/H.D. Stafford) tallied two goals apiece ... Campbell added two assists, tallying four points for the second time this season ... senior Ryan Keneally (St. James, N.Y./St. Anthony's/Ohio State) and junior Sean Brady (Huntington Bay, N.Y./Huntington/Duke) split time in goal for the first time this season ... they combined to make nine saves ... Delaware's Grant Kaleikau was held to two goals and an assist after entering Saturday's game with 11 goals and 17 assists in six games ... The Blue Hens were held to one second-half goal ... Stony Brook hosts two games this week - St. John's on March 13 and Towson on March 17.
Vermont (0-5) dropped a pair of games last week against nationally ranked teams … The Catamounts opened the week with a 16-10 loss at No. 1 Virginia on Tuesday … Sophomore Connor McNamara (Winchester, Mass./Brewster Academy) paced the Catamounts with four goals and an assist … The four goals and five points were both career-highs for McNamara … Senior Geoff Worley (Coronado, Calif./Coronado) added a goal and three assists for Vermont … The five points were the most for a Catamount since Drew Philie (Sandwich, Mass./Deerfield Academy) had four goals and an assist in a 15-5 win over Holy Cross on April 5 of last season … Worley moves into sole possession of fourth place all-time at Vermont in assists with 66 for his career … The 10 goals were a season-high for the Cats … On Sunday Vermont played its first game on the brand new Virtue Field, falling to No. 17 Fairfield 14-7 … Worley led Vermont with three points on a goal and two assists, while Philie and McNamara each scored twice … Philie has scored a point in 25 straight games, which is the 14th-longest active streak in the nation ... Vermont returns to action this week when it travels to face Holy Cross on Tuesday at 7 p.m. and then hosts Sacred Heart on Saturday at 1 p.m.
