Three television games are part of Saturday's America East men's basketball action, including Albany hosting Stony Brook in Big Purple Growl, the University's winter homecoming. Elsewhere Hartford visits Vermont, UMBC hosts Maine and Binghamton entertains Boston U.
The Great Danes (15-9, 7-3 AE) and Seawolves (14-7, 9-1 AE) tip at 7 p.m. on Time Warner Sports in a game that will have major implications on the league standings. Albany, which has won three straight and eight of its last 11, sits two games behind first-place Stony Brook in the standings and can move within a game of the Seawolves, who have won five straight and 11 of their last 12, with a win.
The game pits the conference's top offense and its top defense against each other. Albany averages a league-best 74.1 points per game while Stony Brook holds opponents to 58.8 points per game, which ranks 16th nationally. The Great Danes have been unbeatable at SEFCU Arena this year and have a 12-game win streak there dating back to last year. Stony Brook took the first meeting, 81-66.
Vermont (14-10, 8-2 AE) looks to stay hot and keep pace with the Seawolves when Hartford (4-18, 4-6 AE) visits Patrick Gym at 1 p.m. in a game that will be televised locally on WCAXtra. The Catamounts have won five in a row and eight of their last nine, including a 72-59 victory over the Hawks on Jan. 8.
In Baltimore, Maine (10-10, 4-5 AE), winner of two straight, looks to get back to .500 in league place at UMBC (3-18, 2-7 AE) at 3:30 p.m. The Black Bears seek the season sweep of the Retrievers after taking the first meeting 89-70.
In Vestal, N.Y., Boston U. (11-13, 7-3 AE) looks to recover after dropping two in a row at Bingahmton (0-22, 0-10 AE). The Terriers beat the Bearcats, 68-49, in the two teams' first get together.
