Cohen's 14-Save Effort Nets Men's Lacrosse Player of the Week Honors

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- A double-digit save performance paced UMBC men's lacrosse to a win on Sunday and earned junior Adam Cohen America East Player of the Week accolades. Hartford's Kevin O'Shea racked up his second straight three-point game to earn Rookie of the Week honors for the second time in as many weeks. The awards for the week ending Feb. 26 were announced Monday afternoon.

Cohen (Arnold, Md.) made 14 saves to lead UMBC to an 11-7 win at Rutgers Sunday. The junior goalkeeper made seven of his stops in the final quarter and took on of them the length of the field for a goal. The score is believed to be first goal scored by a Retriever netminder in program history.

O'Shea (Dix Hills, N.Y.) earned his second straight top rookie honor by scoring twice and adding an assist in Hartford's 15-14 overtime loss to Holy Cross Saturday.The freshman attack, who also picked up four ground balls, leads the Hawks with six points (five goals, one assist) through two games.

Elsewhere this weekend, Binghamton won its season opener, 10-8, over Lafayette on Saturday behind three scores from Michael Antinozzi. Albany fell to Drexel, 13-8, while Stony Brook was downed by No. 1 Virginia, 12-5. Vermont also fell at No. 14/15 Harvard, 11-4.

Albany (0-2)
dropped its home opener to Drexel, 13-8, on Saturday at John Fallon Field... Senior Joe Resetarits (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg) led the Great Danes, scoring three goals and adding two assists... The senior attackman netted the equalizer in the first period to set the score at 3-3, and then scored back-to-back goals in the third, pulling the Great Danes back to within 8-7... The rest of the scoring for UAlbany was done by the Thompson trio... Sophomores Miles (Onondaga Nation, N.Y./LaFayette) and Ty (Hogansburg, N.Y./Salmon River Central) each scored two goals, while freshman Lyle (Onondaga Nation, N.Y./LaFayette) scored the final goal... Lyle also recorded two assists, while Miles and Ty finished with one each... Senior goalkeeper John Carroll (Nesconset, N.Y./Smithtown East) played all 60 minutes between the pipes for the Great Danes, making four saves... UAlbany will return to action on Saturday, visiting Yale in non-conference action.

Binghamton (1-0) picked up a 10-8 victory over Lafayette in their season-opener Saturday afternoon at the Bearcats Sports Complex in Vestal, NY. BU enjoyed great success from their midfield as sophomore Michael Antinozzi (3 goals) and Tyler Perrelle (2 goals) led the offensive attack. Senior Ben Waldron stood out defensively registering 10 ground balls, eight caused turnovers and also added a goal for the home squad. Senior goalie Jordan Marra made 14 saves for BU who travels to nearby Ithaca, NY to take on #3/5 Cornell on Tuesday.

Hartford (0-2) overcame a three goal, fourth quarter deficit but could not pick up its first win of the season on Saturday as Holy Cross found the back of the net first just 28 seconds into overtime ... The contest marked Hartford's home opener ... Senior attackmen Aidan Genik (Toronto, Ontario/Malvern CI/Univ. of Western Ontario) and Carter Bender (Caledon, Ontario/Brewster Academy) each netted a hat trick, finishing with five and four points respectively ... The Hawks led for most of the first half until the Crusaders pushed ahead for the first time with 1:30 left until halftime ... Playing from behind in the second half, Hartford erased a three-goal deficit with three unanswered tallies ... Bender struck first before junior transfer Garrett Dollard (Albany, N.Y./Colonie/Onondaga CC) made it a one goal game with 59 seconds to go and senior Ryan Compitello (Hauppauge, N.Y./Hauppauge) netted the equalizer with just 15 seconds left ... In goal, senior Scott Bement (Canandaigua, N.Y./Canandaigua) made 11 saves while allowing 15 goals ... Holy Cross held the advantage at the X (18-32) however Hartford finished with a 43-36 edge in shots ... Bender now ranks sixth all-time in points (122) while Genik moved to sixth in Hartford history with 87 career goals ... Prior to opening face-off, Hartford's 2011 America East Championship banner was unveiled ... The Hawks take on their second ranked opponent in three games as they head west on Saturday to face No. 14 Denver at 1:00 p.m.

Junior goalkeeper Adam Cohen (Arnold, Md./The Severn Schol) stopped a career-high 14 Rutgers shots as UMBC (1-1) defeated the Scarlet Knights, 11-7, at the RU Stadium Complex on Sundy...Cohen scored UMBC’s final goal of the day with 1:39 remaining and it is believed to be the first goal scored by a Retriever goalkeeper in 32 years of NCAA Division I competition... He made seven fourth quarter saves and turned a late Knight turnover into a one-man clear and goal to punctuate his first victory since a 8-7 overtime win at Vermont on April 24, 2010... Cohen’s first career win also occurred at Rutgers, a 6-5 victory on Feb. 28, 2010... Sophomore midfielder Zach Linkous (Jarrettsville, Md./St. Paul’s) scored a career-best five goals to lead the Retriever offense... He scored the game's first goal, had two in the second quarter and another pair in the third stanza... Linkous, an America East All-Rookie team selection in 2011, scored a season-best two goals on two occasions in his freshman campaign... Junior midfielder Dave Brown (Coopersburg, Pa./The Hill School) added two goals and two assists for UMBC, while sophomore middie Ryan Johnston (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown) also had multiple points with a goal and a helper... Sophomore face-off specialist Phil Poe (Harwood, Md./DeMatha) won half of his 22 draws attempted, while junior midfielder Neill Lewnes (Annapolis, Md./St. Mary’s) and sophomore LSM Nathan Klein (Coquitlam, B.C./Western Reserve) each contributed five ground balls and two caused turnovers apiece... The Retrievers took an 8-7 series lead over the Scarlet Knights and avenged a 12-5 loss to Rutgers at UMBC Stadium a year ago... UMBC returns home on Saturday, March 3, when it hosts Fairfield.

Stony Brook (0-2) lost at No. 1/1 Virginia, 12-5, and is 0-10 all-time vs. the Cavaliers ... The Seawolves scored the game's first two goals, but were outscored, 12-5, the rest of the way ... senior Kyle Belton (Langley, British Columbia) had two goals to lead Stony Brook, which scored two man-up goals and is 6-11 this season on extra man opportunities ... Stony Brook's two-goal lead was just the second in the all-time series ... senior Russ Bonanno (Seaford, N.Y.) had at least two points (1g, 1a) for the 12th time in 16 career games ... Stony Brook hosts Marist in its 2012 home opener on Saturday, March 3 ... the Seawolves are 12-2 all-time vs. the Red Foxes, who are 1-0 after beating Sacred Heart, 12-10, in their season opener.

Vermont (0-2) fell on the road to #14/15 Harvard 11-4 on Saturday in its only action of the week … The Crimson jumped out to a 7-1 lead early in the fourth quarter in their season opener … Saturday marked the second straight nationally ranked opponent that Vermont has faced to open the season, as sophomore Connor McNamara (Winchester, Mass./Brewster Academy) paced the Cats with a pair of goals … McNamara scored UVM’s first of the day as dating back to the season opener seven different Catamounts scored Vermont’s first seven goals of the year … Freshman Andrew Buckanavage (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield) scored a goal for a second consecutive game and junior Drew Philie (Sandwich, Mass./Deerfield Academy) earned a pair of assists for career points number 100 and 101 … Philie is now just 27 points shy of cracking the top 10 all-time scoring list at Vermont … Senior David Barton (Hanover, Mass./Boston College HS) stopped 14 shots in goal for the Cats … The Catamounts return to action on Saturday, March 3 when they travel to face Bryant starting at 3 p.m.
