CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- The 2012 men's lacrosse season kicked off over the weekend and Stony Brook's Robbie Campbell and Hartford's Kevin O'Shea rode high-scoring performances to earn the first weekly awards of the season. Campbell took home Player of the Week honors, while O'Shea garnered Rookie of the Week accolades. The awards for the week ending Feb. 19 were announced Monday afternoon.
Campbell (Delta, British Columbia) tallied four points in the Seawolves' 13-10 season-opening loss at Fairfield. The senior midfielder scored two goals and dished out as many assists against the Stags. The four points were the most by an America East player last weekend. Campbell, a second-team all-conference choice last year, also picked up a pair of ground balls.
O'Shea (Dix Hills, N.Y.) tallied three goals off the bench in his collegiate debut at No. 7 Maryland Saturday. The freshman helped keep Hartford, the reigning America East champion, in the game as he tallied all three of his scores in the second half. The first, which came in the opening minutes of the third quarter, tied the game 4-4. O'Shea, who also had two ground balls, then gave his team a 5-4 lead 3:17 later before the Terrapins ran off eight of the next nine scores en route to a 12-6 win.
Elsewhere over the weekend, Albany fell at No. 8 Syracuse, 12-7, while UMBC dropped its opener to Robert Morris, 10-8 and Vermont fell at No. 19 Colgate, 10-6.

Albany (0-1) dropped its season-opener to No. 8 Syracuse, 12-7, on Sunday, Feb. 19... The Great Danes scored the first two goals of the game in quick succession, but Syracuse netted the next 10, holding UAlbany scoreless for 40 minutes... Senior Joe Resetarits (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg) and sophomore Ty Thompson (Hogansburg, N.Y./Salmon River Central) each tallied three goals each for UAlbany... Freshman Lyle Thompson (Onondaga Nation, N.Y./LaFayette) scored his first career goal and added an assist in his debut... Senior goalkeeper John Carroll (Nesconset, N.Y./Smithtown East) played all 60 minutes between the pipes, making eight saves, including five in the final quarter... The Great Danes outshot the Orange, 42-36, including taking 19 shots in the last period... However, Syracuse held a 13-10 advantage in face offs and converted 2-of-3 extra-man opportunities, while UAlbany was only successful in 4-of-10 man-up situations... The Great Danes will return to action on Saturday, hosting Drexel in the home opener at John Fallon Field.
Binghamton (0-0) begins its first season under new head coach Scott Nelson. He inherits 25 players from last year’s team, including seven starters ... Junior attack Matt Springer is the team’s top returner after ranking third in America East in goals last year (29) and earning second-team all-conference honors ... The Bearcats, who were 7-8 last year, start 2012 against Lafayette on Feb. 25.
Hartford (0-1) opened up its 2012 campaign at No. 7 Maryland and fell to the Terps by a 12-6 final on Saturday afternoon … Freshman Kevin O’Shea (Dix Hills, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills West) got his collegiate career going with a bang as he came off of the bench to net a hat trick to tally a team-best three points … Aidan Genik (Toronto, Ontario/Malvern C.I./Univ. of Western Ontario), Tate Klidonas (Emmaus, Pa./Emmaus) and Martin Bowes (Quincy, Mass./Quincy) also reached the back of the net for the Hawks while Carter Bender (Caledon, Ontario/Brewster Academy) assisted on a pair of goals … In net, Scott Bement made 12 saves and collected a team-best four ground balls … Hartford jumped out to a 2-0 first quarter advantage but saw that slip away as the Terps edged the Hawks, 4-1, in the second period … Trailing 4-3 out of the halftime break, O’Shea helped the Hawks regain their advantage at 5-4 with two-straight goals however Maryland responded with a 4-0 run within a span of three minutes to put the game out of reach at 8-5 … The Terps went on to outscore the Hawks, 4-1, down the stretch … Last week, Genik was selected as a candidate for the 2012 Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award while Bender was named to the Tewaaraton Award Watch List … Hartford plays its first home game of the season on Saturday when it hosts Holy Cross at 1:00 p.m. … The Hawks are 10-17 in home openers and hold a 13-10 advantage in the all-time series against Holy Cross.
In its earliest home opener ever (Feb. 18), UMBC (0-1) used a three-goal run early in the fourth quarter to draw even with Robert Morris, but the Colonials scored 31 after the Retrievers had tied the game at 8-all and went on to a 10-8 victory at UMBC Stadium... Junior attackman Scott Jones (Port Coquitlam, B.C./Terry Fox) scored a pair of man-up goals in that 3-0 run and led UMBC with two goals and a helper on the day... Junior attackman Joe Lustgarten (Wading River, N.Y./Wading River) and sophomore midfielder Zach Linkous (Jarrettsville, Md./St. Paul's) added two goals each... Junior Adam Cohen (Arnold, Md./Severn) reclaimed the starting goalkeeper position that he held for most of his freshman season and was solid with 10 saves vs. the Colonials... Sophomore Phil Poe (Harwood, Md./DeMatha) was outstanding at the x, winning 15 of 21 draws, including five of six in the fourth quarter... He led all players with six ground balls... Poe's 15 face-off wins was the most since Taylor Marino won 15 vs. Albany in the 2008 America East title game... UMBC outshot RMU, 47-32 and did not commit a penalty in the game... The Retrievers take on Rutgers in Piscataway on Sunday.
Stony Brook (0-1) lost its season opener to Fairfield, 13-10 ... redshirt freshman Mike Rooney (East Islip, N.Y.) led the Seawolves with a career-best three goals ... senior Robbie Campbell (Delta, British Columbia) tallied two goals and two assists and junior Jeff Tundo (Orchard Park, N.Y.) added two goals and an assist ... junior Sean Brady (Huntington Bay, N.Y.) made a career-best 13 saves ... the Seawolves never trailed in the first half, but Fairfield took a 9-6 lead after four straight goals to start the third quarter ... Stony Brook got as close as two goals, 9-7, 10-8 and 12-10, the rest of the way ... four of Stony Brook's 10 starters were new to the team ... six different players scored for Stony Brook ... the Seawolves travel to face No. 1 Virginia on Saturday, February 25 ... the game will be televised live on ESPN3.com.
Vermont (0-1) opened the 2012 season on Saturday with a 10-6 loss at No. 19 Colgate … Freshman Dan Gutberlet (Freeland, Md./St. Paul’s) led the Catamounts with two points on a goal and an assist … Six different Catamounts recorded goals in the game … Senior Geoff Worley (Coronado, Calif./Coronado) was one of the six Cats to score, as he has netted a goal in 11 straight games dating back to last season with is the seventh-longest active streak in the nation … Worley also earned his 46th consecutive start which is the third-longest active streak in the country … InsideLacrosse.com Preseason Honorable Mention All-American Drew Philie (Sandwich, Mass./Deerfield Academy) also recorded a goal … UVM trailed only 8-6 in the game, but the Raiders added two goals in the final 1:47 of play … Senior David Barton (Hanover, Mass./Boston College HS) made 13 saves in goal for Vermont … The Catamounts return to action on Saturday when they travel to face Harvard starting at 12 p.m.
