Taking a break from conference play, America East men's basketball teams went 5-4 in 2012 Sears BracketBusters contests over the weekend. It is the third time in the last five years America East has posted a winning BracketBusters record.
Albany, Hartford, New Hampshire, Stony Brook and Vermont all picked up wins Saturday, while Binghamton, Maine and UMBC dropped contests. Boston U., the lone team playing Sunday, fell at Loyola, 69-56. This is the first season all nine America East school have participated in the event.
The Great Danes (17-13) beat Rider, 70-61, to assure their first winning season since the 2006-07 campaign. Playing without three starters and having just seven players dressed, Jacob Iati stepped into the lineup and scored a career-high 20 points to lead Albany.
The Hawks (8-19) shot a season-high 61.9 percent from the field en route to a 67-51 win over St. Peter's. The win, Hartford's first non-league win of the year, is its fourth straight overall. Mark Nwakamma led three Hawks in twin figures with 18 points.
The Wildcats (12-14) ran their win streak to four games, their longest since the 2005-06 season with a 72-58 win over Towson. The Wildcats, who were led by 19 points each from Ferg Myrick and Chandler Rhoads, held the Tigers to just 32 percent shooting.
The Seawolves (18-8) overcame a nine-point second-half deficit to earn a 76-69 win at Northeastern, their 15th in their last 17 games. Dave Coley tied his career high with 21 points while Dallis Joyner recorded his third double-double of the year (10 points, 10 rebounds).
The Catamounts (19-10) shot 55.2 percent from the floor and downed Niagara, 92-70. It's Vermont's 10th straight win overall and eighth consecutive at Patrick Gym. Four McGlynn led the way by scoring 20 points off the bench on 7-of-11 shooting, including 6-of-10 from three-point land.
The Bearcats (0-26) committed 18 turnovers which turned into 24 Radford points in a 64-59 defeat. Ben Dickinson paced the Bearcats with 14 points and nine rebounds.
The Retrievers (4-23) got a monster double-double of 24 points and 14 rebounds from Chase Plummer but fell at Canisius, 73-66.
The Black Bears (11-15) allowed Marist to shoot 51.8 percent and dropped a 77-71 decision to the Red Foxes. Gerald McLemore scored a team-high 20 points.
The Terriers (14-15) were outscored 40-28 after halftime by Loyola and dropped their second straight. Darryl Partin had a game-high tying 17 points.
