CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Boston University senior Chantell
Alford was named America East women's basketball player of the week for the
third time in four weeks after leading the Terriers to a 2-0 record. Maine
freshman Liz Wood was named Rookie of the Week as the conference office
announced the weekly awards for the week ending Dec. 2.
Alford (West Haven, Conn.) had a tremendous week to be
named Player of the Week for the third time already this season. The senior led
Boston U. to an early week win over Rhode Island, and then shot lights out to
pace the Terriers to a signature victory over No. 17/15 St. John's on Saturday.
For the week, Alford led the conference in scoring, averaging 19.5 points per
game, while also averaging 4.5 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.5 blocks. In the
Terriers 54-29 win over URI, Alford had 17 points on 7-of-13 shooting. She
followed that with 22 points, six rebounds and three assists to push Boston U.
to its second win over a ranked opponent in program history against St. John's,
and the first non-conference ranked win for the America East since Hartford
beat Louisville on Nov. 17, 2009. Alford hit six 3-pointers in the game, one
shy of the school record and finished the week shooting 56-percent from the
field and 80-percent from downtown.
Wood (Catlett, Va.) notched her first career double-double
to earn America East Rookie of the Week accolades. The freshman had 10 points
and 10 rebounds in Maine's loss to reigning Atlantic Sun champion Florida Gulf
Coast on Saturday. She was 4-of-10 from the field and also added two assists in
the contest.
