CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - After winning their first
America East Conference women’s soccer title in program history to earn the
conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, the Stony Brook Seawolves learned
their fate during the NCAA Selection Show on Monday afternoon. Stony Brook will
travel to College Park, Md., to face the
University of Maryland Terrapins in the first round of the 2012 NCAA Women's Soccer Championship on Saturday, November 10 at 7 p.m.
Stony Brook earned the conference's automatic bid to the tournament by
defeating Hartford, 1-0, Sunday evening in the America East title game.
The
Seawolves (12-6-3) are making their first appearance in the NCAA Tournament and
will face Maryland who is ranked No. 9 in the country. The Terps (13-6-2) lost
in Atlantic Coast Conference title game after finishing second in the conference
in the regular season. Maryland is seeded fourth in the bracket that also
includes reigning national champion Stanford.
The
Seawolves were the first No. 6 seed in the history of the America East
Championship to win the title, beating New Hampshire and Maine on the road
before taking down No. 1 seed Hartford in the final.
