STONY BROOK, N.Y. - Stony Brook scored two goals in the
final 16 minutes of play to tie the game, setting the stage for Will Casey's
game-winning overtime goal in the 99th minute to give the No. 3 seed Seawolves a 5-4 win over No. 6 Binghamton at
Lavalle Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The nine combined goals set an America East Championship
record, breaking the previous mark of eight set back in 2001.
Stony Brook freshman Alejandro Fritz also put his name into
the tournament record books, tying the record for most points in a game with seven,
scoring two goals and adding an assist.
Stony Brook struck first in the contest, with Raphael Abreu
scoring off a one-touch pass from Fritz in the 10th minute of action.
Binghamton quickly responded tying the game on an Adam
Whitehead blast from 32-yards out that beat Stony Brook keeper Stefan Manz into
the upper-right corner in the 15th minute.
The back-and-forth action continued, as the Seawolves took a
2-1 lead on Fritz's first goal of the game. The freshman blast a right-footed
shot from a yard outside the box into the net at the far right post.
Trey Jasenki evented the game late in the first half, as the
Bearcat defender fired a shot that hit the bottom of the post and bounced
behind the goal line to knot the game at two heading into halftime.
Binghamton came out aggressively in the second half, jumping
on the Seawolves with two goals in the first 17 minutes. The first came off the foot of Jake Keegan,
swinging a shot into the far right corner of the net from just outside the
penalty area to make it 3-2.
Keegan also was involved in the second goal, this time
carrying the ball to the endline and placing to the top of the six-yard box
where it was headed in by Steven Celeste to put the Bearcats up 4-2 in the 62nd
minute.
But the Seawolves stayed mentally tough, cutting the deficit
to 4-3 in the 74th minute. Kyle Schlesinger curled a free kick into the box
that found America East Midfielder of the Year Leonardo Fernandes at the far
post for the easy finish.
Stony Brook continued to pressure but could not score,
hitting several crossbars with Binghamton clinging to a one-goal lead.
The Seawolves tied the game in dramatic fashion, as Fritz
was able to find the ball in a scramble in the box, finishing into the top of
the net with less than 50 seconds remaining in the game.
The overtime period saw both teams with quality looks early.
Binghamton was denied a game-winning goal off the head of Keegan on a brilliant
diving save from Manz.
Once again the Seawolves waited until to final minute to
breakthrough, with Fernandes sending a cross into the box from the right side
that bounced through to Casey. The defender finished with his right foot into
an open net to give Stony Brook the 5-4 win.
The Seawolves travel to face No. 2 seed UMBC on Wednesday,
November 7 at 7 p.m.
