CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - UMBC senior defender Liam Paddock and
Hartford senior forward Amelia Pereira were each named Capital One Academic
All-Americans as the Division I Men's and Women's Soccer Teams were released
Thursday. The teams were selected by the College Sports Information Directors
of America (CoSIDA).
Paddock
(Worcestershire, England), the 2012 America East Defender of the Year, was
named to the Capital One All-America First Team, becoming the first America
East player since Vermont's Conner Tobin in 2008 to earn first team honors. He led
the Retrievers to the 2012 America East title and a win in the first round of
the NCAA Championship over Old Dominion.
Paddock
anchored a defense that led the conference in goals allowed per game at 0.77.
The Retrievers recorded five-straight shutouts to end the season. Paddock, who
was also an America East First Team selection, has a 3.92 GPA while double
majoring in Psychology and Sociology. He is the fourth Capital One Academic
All-America selection since 2008.
The 2012
America East Offensive Player of the Year, Pereira earned a Capital One
All-America Second Team nod. The senior led the conference in scoring with 13
goals and seven assists to total 33 points. She finished ranked 33rd
in the country in goals and seventh in game-winning goals with six.
Pereira is
just the second Hartford women's soccer player to earn All-America status and
the first since Katharina Lindner in 2002. She is also the second America East
women's soccer player since 2009 to earn Capital One All-America recognition,
joining Boston University's Emily Pallotta who was a third team honoree in
2009.
