CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - UMBC's Brittany Crowell and Lauren Chase each had double-doubles as the Retrievers won their second-straight game, defeating local-rival Coppin State, 83-75, in overtime.
Chase had a team-high 22 points to go with 10 assists, while Crowell had 19 points and a game-best 17 rebounds, but it was senior guard Raven Harris who drained the go-ahead
three in overtime with the shot clock expiring that proved to be the
difference maker. Harris’ three, her first of the season, broke a 74-74
tie with 2:32 and gave UMBC a three-point lead that it would not
relinquish as the Retrievers outscored Coppin State 13-5 in the extra
period. It was UMBC's first overtime game since Jan.20, 2011, against Hartford.
UMBC was one of two America East teams to win on Wednesday night along with New Hampshire, who played its season-opener at Yale. The Wildcats defeated the Bulldogs, 57-51,
New Hampshire shot 41-percent from the field while holding Yale to just
30-percent field goal shooting for the game.
Senior guard Kelsey Hogan had a team-high 14 points, while Morgan Frame
added 13 and Cari Reed pulled down 11 rebounds. UNH won its second-consecutive
home-opener while improving to 10-1 all-time against the Bulldogs.
In other action, Lauren Buschman led Vermont with 20 points in the team’s,
92-76, loss at Providence. Binghamton gave Cornell a fight, but fell to the Big
Red, 60-56, in the home-opener for the Bearcats.
No games are on the docket for Thursday night, but both Boston University
and Hartford will be in action on Friday night. The Terriers host Richmond from
the Atlantic-10 and Hartford takes the short trip to play the Northeast
Conference’s Central Connecticut State.
