CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Hartford beat MAAC preseason favorite Marist, 63-52, Tuesday night as part of three America East games. Albany also recorded a 67-50 win at home over Long Island and Maine dropped a 68-44 decision to Syracuse.
It was a back-and-forth affair in Hartford in what Marist head coach Brian Giorgis called "The best non-conference rivalry in the northeast." The Red Foxes and Hawks were meeting for the fourth-straight year, and this time it was Hartford coming out on top for the first time since 2007.
Leading by just two points with two minutes to go, Hartford used a 9-0 run to close the game to take home an 11-point win. Senior Ruthanne Doherty had 10 of her team-high 14 points in the second half. Alex Hall also added 10 points off the bench.
Albany (1-1) bounced-back from an opening-night loss with a 67-50 win over Long Island. The Great Danes were led by Ebone Henry's 16 points and 10 rebounds for her 13th career double-double.
After the Blackbirds chopped the Albany lead to six points, the Great Danes went on a 13-0 run over a five-minute stretch to take a commanding lead with less than two-minutes to go.
Maine hung tough with the Big East's Syracuse, trailing by just four at halftime and single digits for most of the second half until a 17-0 run by the Orange stretched a six-point lead to 23 with five minutes left.
