CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Maine played its final game of the Sheraton Raleigh Wolfpack Invitational, while Binghamton opened its season at St. Bonaventure on Saturday. Three more America East teams play Sunday, including Vermont and UMBC playing their home openers, and Stony Brook hosting Navy in its second-straight home game.
Maine played an overtime thriller against Wofford, tying the game with 18 seconds left in regulation on a Brittany Wells 3-pointer. Ashleigh Roberts led Maine with a career-high 29 points on 11-of-17 shooting.
Wofford twice built three-point leads in the overtime which were erased by Maine, first on a three from the top of the key from Courtney Anderson and than after Roberts completed a three-point play
with a made free throw following a layup. However, Wofford hit
three-straight free throws in the final minute and the Black Bears could
not overcome this final three-point deficit, dropping the contest
79-76.
The Bearcats dropped their season-opener, 61-34 at St. Bonaventure. Seventeen of Binghamton's 34 points were scored by freshmen, including a team-high 12 points from Morgan Murphy. She became the first Binghamton rookie since Jasbriell Swain in 2010 to register double figures in a season opener.
Binghamton jumped out to a 10-3 with just over 14 minutes left in the first half. But the Bonnies fought back and then went on a 17-0 run that gave the home team a 22-12 advantage with five minutes remaining in the first half. St. Bonaventure held the Bearcats to 24-percent shooting.
Three games highlight Sunday's action. Vermont hosts Columbia at 1 p.m. in its home-opener, while UMBC also plays its home opener at 2 p.m. against Monmouth. Stony Brook hosts Navy at 6:30 p.m.
