CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - University of Hartford senior Amelia Pereira
and freshman Sidney Spremullo were named America East Player of the Week and
Rookie of the Week, respectively, for the week ending October 7, the conference
office announce Monday. The pair helped Hartford become the first team in the
conference to clinch a spot in the America East Championship that begins on
October 25.
Pereira (Madeira
Island, Portugal) led the Hawks to a perfect week with a 3-0 shutout of Maine
and a 2-0 shutout at home against Albany, taking part in all five of the Hawks
goals on the week. The senior striker finished with a goal and two assists in
the weeks' opener in Orono, and then scored both of the Hawks tallies against
the Great Danes on Sunday afternoon. Pereira
has now been a factor in the teams' last six straight goals, scoring three
and assisting on three others. At Maine, Pereira assisted Spremullo on her
first collegiate goal and then provided a pass to classmate Caroline Dixon
before proving a score of her own late in the 69th minute. She then scored both
of the Hawks goals against Albany in a rematch of last season's America East
semifinal match-up. Pereira's two goals
against the Great Danes push her team and league leading tally to 12 goals,
while adding six assists for 30 points.
Spremullo
(Woodbury, Conn.), making her second and third starts of the season,
finished her best individual week of the season with her first collegiate goal
at Maine and assisting on one against Albany. The rookie opened the week with
the game-winning goal in the 22nd minute at Maine off an assist from Pereira on
Thursday, and then returned the favor providing a flick pass in the box to
Pereira who directed the game-winner past Albany keeper Alana Brennan in the
18th minute. For the season, Spremullo has a goal and two assists, having
played in all 14 games, starting in three.
Notes:
Boston University won its 29th-straight America
East game, 3-2, over Stony Brook on Sunday... Hartford's Pereira has six goals in
conference play already with three more games to go. The all-time record for
goals scored in conference play in a season is 12, set by Hartford's Maria Kun
in 1997.
