Sunday's battle of America East unbeatens featured Albany, one of the league's most explosive offensives teams, against Stony Brook, the conference's elite defensive squad. However, the Seawolves flipped the script and scored 81 points, its most against a Division I opponent this season, en route to an 81-66 victory over the Great Danes.
The Seawolves (8-6, 3-0 AE) shot a season-high 56 percent in the win, their fifth straight. The win moves Stony Brook to 3-0 in league play for just the second time (2009-10) in its America East history and extends its home court win streak to seven games.
Bryan Dougher scored 16 of his 19 points after halftime to lead the Seawolves while Dallis Joyner recorded his first double-double of the year (15 points, 11 rebounds). Gerard Suero went over 20 points for the ninth straight game and finished with a game-high 28 for Albany (10-7, 2-1 AE), which had its three-game win streak snapped.
Also on Sunday, Boston U. (5-11, 1-1 AE) snapped a seven-game losing skid and picked up its first conference win with a 68-49 defeat of Binghamton (0-15, 0-3 AE). The Terriers, who have won their last 13 games at home against league foes, had 17 assists on 25 baskets while their bench outscored the Bearcats' 26-0 led by Malik Thomas' 14 points. Darryl Partin paced Boston U. with 17 points, while Binghamton's Robert Mansell had a game-high 21.
In West Hartford, Vermont (8-9, 2-1 AE) won its second straight conference game, downing the host Hawks (1-14, 1-2 AE), 72-59. The Catamounts, who have won 19 of the last 20 get togethers with Hartford, outrebounded their opponent 43-25 and converted 30-of-36 free throw attempts en route to the win. Matt Glass led the way with 15 points while Four McGlynn had 14 off the bench. Wes Coles, Yolonzo Moore II and Andres Torres all had 11 for the Hawks.
On Saturday,
Maine (8-5, 2-0 AE) improved to 2-0 in the league standings for the first time since
the 2004-05 season with an 89-70 win over UMBC (2-13, 1-2 AE). The Black Bears shot 51
percent from the floor, including 62 percent after halftime. Gerald
McLemore tallied a game-high 29 points on 9-of-15 shooting while
Alasdair Fraser had a double-double of 16 points and 11 boards. Chase
Plummer paced UMBC with 17 points.
