A battle of league unbeatens highlights Sunday's three America East men's basketball contests. Stony Brook will host Albany with the Seawolves looking for their second-ever 3-0 conference start (2009-10) and the Great Danes in search of their first since the 2005-06 campaign.
Both teams come into Sunday red hot with Stony Brook riding a four-game win streak and Albany having won three straight and eight of its last 11. Both teams have taken care of business at home and have a perfect combined mark of 11-0 on their home courts this year. The Great Danes will try to snap the Seawolves' seven-game win streak at Pritchard Gym, which dates back to last season.
Something will have to give as the battle between SUNY rivals pits one of the league's best offenses against one of its best defenses. The Great Danes rank second averaging 74.3 points per game and have averaged 88.5 points through its first two conference games. On the other end of the spectrum, Stony Brook leads the conference holding opponents to 62.3 points per game and has allowed just 56.5 per game in its first two conference games. Albany swept last year's regular-season series, but the Seawolves avenged those losses with a 67-61 defeat of the Great Danes in the quarterfinals of the America East Championship en route to making their first-ever league title game appearance.
Elsewhere on Sunday, Vermont will visit Hartford in a battle of teams looking for its second conference win. The Catamounts downed Boston U. on Thursday while the Hawks upended New Hampshire for their first victory of the season. Vermont has won 18 of the last 19 series meetings. Also, Boston U. hosts Binghamton and both teams are in search of its first conference victory. The Terriers have won four straight over Binghamton and 12 straight against America East foes on its home court.
On Saturday, Maine improved to 2-0 in the league standings for the first time since the 2004-05 season with an 89-70 win over UMBC. The Black Bears shot 51 percent from the floor, including 62 percent after halftime. Gerald McLemore tallied a game-high 29 points on 9-of-15 shooting while Alasdair Fraser had a double-double of 16 points and 11 boards. Chase Plummer paced UMBC with 17 points.
