Cambridge, Mass. – Boston University swimmers and divers put together a solid weekend in the pool and sweep the America East weekly awards.
Jeff Thomas (Foxboro, Mass./Bishop Feehan) collects Male Swimmer of the Week accolades and Amanda Schmitz (Pleasanton, Calif./Foothill) picks up the Female Swimmer of the Week Award. On the boards, Jared Scheck (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shady Side Academy) gets the Male Diver of the Week nod and Melinda Matyas (Budapest, Hungary/Eotvos Jozsef Gimnazium) is the Female Diver of the Week.
Thomas won the 100 breaststroke in an event with Brown and Columbia touching the wall in 58.08 to pick up Boston U.’s only individual victory of the day. That time is the second fastest in the conference this season. Thomas also finished second in the 200 IM (1:55.92) and fourth in the 100 fly (51.51)
Schmitz collected two wins for the Terriers finishing first in the 1,000 freestyle (10:14.87) and the 200 fly (2:03.14). Her time in the 1,000 free was the fastest in the conference this season. Schmitz also finished third in the 500 free (5:01.15).
Scheck picked up a third-place finish on the three-meter board and a fourth-place finish on the one-meter board with scores of 260.30 and 264.75.
Matyas swept the diving events for the women scoring 256 points in the one-meter event and 267.10 points off the three-meter board. Those are both top-five scores in the conference.
Binghamton had the week off from the pool but will return to action this weekend when it hosts America East foe Stony Brook in Vestal.
Boston University competed this weekend against Brown and Columbia at the Competition Pool. The men earned a split, defeating Brown and falling to Columbia while the women were swept on the day. Leading the way for the Terrier men was Jeff Thomas who claimed Boston U.’s only individual win of the meet, taking the crown in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 58.08. The relay team of Justin Gilmartin, Cole Puchi, Lincoln Kupke and Daniel Kempf claimed first in the 200 freestyle relay in 1:25.34. Kempf also clocked in at 21.31 in the 50 freestyle to take third. On the women’s side, Amanda Schmitza posted apair of wins for the Terriers. She finished first in the 1,000 freestyle (10:14.87) and in the 200 fly (2:03.14). Melinda Matyas led the Terriers in the diving events winning both the one and three-meter dives with scores of 256.00 and 267.10. Next up for the Terriers is a crosstown meet at Boston College on Feb 3.
Maine competed against Boston College over the weekend in a dual meet in Orono. The Black Bear women picked up a win while the men fell to the Eagles. The two-day event was highlighted by freshman Naja Harvey who cruised to victory in the breaststroke events, winning the 100 in 1:06.67 and the 200 in 2:27.16. Harvey also helped two relay teams to victories. Lauren Dwyer (Orono, Maine) also collected a pair of individual victories over the weekend touching the wall first in both the 200 freestyle (1:56.91) and the 200 backstroke (2:10.83). Kara Capossela (Milford, Maine) swept the diving events for the Black Bear women. On the men’s side, Yuri Chornobil (Rochester, N.Y.) collected three second-place finishes over the weekend to set the pace. He finished the 1,000 freestyle in 10:02.35 on day one before tying for second in the 200 freestyle (1:47.58) and collecting his runner-up finish in the 500 free (4:53.05. Brian Landry (Yorktown, Va.) also added a second-place finish in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:12.56. Next up for the Maine men is the America East Championship in Boston from Feb. 23-26 while the women compete next weekend, hosting New Hampshire on Feb. 4.
The UMBC swimming and diving teams did not compete over the weekend but will return to action with they travel to Philadelphia, Pa. for a meet with Penn and LaSalle.
New Hampshire returns to the pool on Feb. 4 when it travels to Orono to take on Maine.
Stony Brook travels to Binghamton this weekend for a dual meet with the Bearcats.
Vermont held off Rhode Island on Saturday on the road, earning a 155-145 victory. Chelsea Krisanda (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) led the Catamounts with a pair of wins, while Vermont also went 1-2-3 in both diving events. Krisanda place first in both the 200 fly (2:08.55) and helped the Catamounts secure the win with a victory in the 200 IM (2:11.41). Senior Meaghan Cunningham (Keene, N.H./Keene) helped Vermont take the top three spots in the one-meter dive, winning the event with a score of 223.79. In the three-meter it was Lauren Colby (Andover, Mass./Andover) winning the event with a total of 246.22 points. Kailey Gardner (Ithaca, N.Y./Ithaca) kept her streak of at least one individual win in every meet this season intact by finishing first in the 500 freestyle in 5:04.90. Saturday marked the final dual meet of the season for Vermont, as part of the squad will next compete at the Middlebury Invitational on Feb. 3-4 p.m.
