Dominant Performances Net Track and Field Weekly Awards

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Two field performers continued their dominance and two track performers bolted to impressive times to capture the conference track and field weekly awards.

New Hampshire’s Brice Paey (Milton, N.H./St. Thomas) collects his third Male Field Performer of the Week nod this season while Maine’s Jesse Labreck (Oakland, Maine/Messalonskee) picks up her second straight Female Feild Performer of the Week award. Boston University’s Rich Peters (Brighton, England/Brimsham Green School) cruises to Male Track Performer of the Week honors and New Hampshire’s Allison Letourneau (Kingston, Nova Scotia/Berkshire Prep School) set a school record en route to netting Female Track Performer of the Week.

Paey remained a force in the shot put this weekend as he picked up his third-straight win in the event. He topped the field with a toss of 17.84 meters. The throw was Paey’s best toss of the season (tops in the America East) and also reached the NCAA Division I provisional mark for the automatic qualifier in the event.

Labreck won three individual events and the pentathlon in ECAC-qualifying form to lead Maine this weekend. She took the top spot in the long jump (18’7.75”), the triple jump (36’3”) and the high jump (5’4.5”). In the pentathlon, she won every event except the shot put and her 3,729 points easily qualified her for the ECAC Championships.

Peters started the indoor track season in style with a win in the mile run at the Multi-Team Meet in Boston. The sophomore clocked in at a blazing 4:00.13, which is the fastest indoor time in the nation this season.

Letourneau turned in a time of 2:48.16 in the 1,000 meter run to qualify for the ECAC Championship and break a school and New Hampshire facility record. The previous record was set in 2002. Letourneau has picked up three wins this season in three different event as she also finished first in the mile and 3,000 meter run earlier in the season.

Albany hosted the 10th Annual Great Dane Classic over the weekend. The men placed thirdout of 26 scoring teams with the leading efforts of Paul Lagno (Salt Point, N.Y./Millbrook) in the mile (4:04.40) and Alfonso Scannapieco (Mohegan Lake, N.Y./Lakeland-Panas) in the pole vault (16’8.75”). Both set personal best marks, while Lagno’s time set a school record and Scannapieco’s victory is his third out of the three meets in the pole vault. Chris Buchanan (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero North Syracuse) and Alex Leuchanka (Clifton Park, N.Y./ Shenendehowa) resgistered top-10 finishes in the 5,000 meter for Albany. In the field, Kadeem Howell (Albany, N.Y./Albany) leapt 23’2.75” in the long jump to place fifth overall. The Great Dane women placed sixth out of 24 scoring teams. Pat McNish (Great Neck, N.Y./Manhasset) set a school record in the long jump (19’4”) while Kathryn Fanning (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) finished first in the 1,000 meter (2:49.33) setting both school and meet records. Overall, the Danes had 13 results that qualified for the ECAC/IC4A Championships. Competition resumes the first weekend of February for Albany.

Binghamton competed in the Cornell Upstate Challenge, a non-scoring meet, in Ithaca, N.Y on Saturday. The Bearcats’ afternoon was highlighted by senior sprinter Kaitlin Sullivan (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park), who broke her own school record in the women’s 60-meter hurdles. Sullivan has now broken her record twice this season after her time of 8.84 on Saturday. Colin Anderson (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville, Manlius) was the top men’s finisher for Binghamton taking third in the weight throw with a toss of 53’8.5”. The Bearcats continue the indoor season next weekend with a pair of meets. Some runners head to the Penn State National Open while others will compete at the Boston Terrier Classic.

Boston University opened up its indoor season with the Multi-Team Meet on Saturday. The women came away in first place out of five squads while the men finished in a tie for second. The Terrier women claimed five events on the day led by Shelby Walton (Danbury, Conn./Danbury) who won two. She placed first in the 60-meter dash (7.69) and in the 200-meter dash (24.68). Betsy Bartlett (Griswold Conn./Griswold) and Alyson Rofrano (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) each cleared a height of 2.75 meters to tie for first in the pole vault. Katie Matthews (Rocky Hill, Conn./Rocky Hill) set a personal record in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 9.17.8. For the men, four different Terriers won events led by Rich Peters in the mile run. Peters’ time of 4.00.13 is the fastest indoor time in the nation this season. Blake Edwards (Nashville, Tenn./Martin Luther King Jr. Magnet) won the long jump (7.04m) and the triple jump (13.62m), while Robert Gibson (Brookline, Mass./Brookline) was tops in the 3,000-meter run, finishing in 8:18.60.

Hartford takes its final week off before opening the 2012 portion of its schedule on Jan. 27 at the Reebok Indoor Games.

The UMBC track and field teams competed Sunday at the Terrapin Invitational. The women finished third with 70 points and the men finished fourth with 70.5 points. Freshman Mercedes Jackson (Huntington, Md./Huntington) won the 60 meter dash (7.60) for the fourth time in four meets this season. Junior Amanda Deller (Aberdeen, Md./Aberdeen) picked up her first win of the season claiming first in the shot put with a throw of 45’6.5”. Deller also finished fourth in the weight throw (52’6.25”). For the men, transfer Chris Nash (Parkton, Md./Hereford/Maryland) claimed gold in the weight throw in his first meet for UMBC. With a throw of 55’6.25”, Nash places fourth on UMBC’s all-time list and qualifies for the IC4A Championship in March. Senior Josh Hewitson (New Market, Md./Linganore) ran a 50.56 in the 400 to place third. The Retrievers will split up to take part in three separate meets next week – the Bison Open and Multi on Friday and Saturday as well as the Patriots Games and Penn State National Open on Saturday.

The Maine track and field teams rode impressive performances in the field events to sweep the Bates Invitational over the weekend. The Black Bear men collected 275 points and the women earned 241.50 to get the wins. Jesse Labreck continued her dominance in the field events this year winning the long jump (18’7.75”), the triple jump (36’3”) and the high jump (5’4.5”). The senior also won the pentathlon for the women. Vasiliki Papakotsi (Athens, Greece) won the pole vault in an ECAC-qualifying mark of 12’3.5” while Alison Fereshetian (Turner, Maine/Waterville) also had a qualifying mark, winning the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.80. On the men’s side, Trevor England (Auburn, Maine) won the long jump with a leap of 22’2.5” and the triple jump with a distance of 46’4”. Also in the field, Wilson Adams (Barrington, R.I./Barrington) took second in the weight throw and qualified for the IC4A Championship in the process with a distance of 56’2”. Joseph Viola (Scarborough, Maine) won the 400 meters with a time of 52.14. Next up for Maine are the Reebok Indoor Games and the Terrier Classic this weekend in Boston.

New Hampshire returned from break hosting a quad-meet against Stonehill, Holy Cross and Worcester State. The men won the meet with 192 points and the women placed second with 168.5 points. Senior Bryce Paey (Milton, N.H./St. Thomas) continued his dominance in the shot put with his third win in as many meets this season, topping the field with a toss of 17.84 meters. Junior Victor Adejuyigbe (Penacook, N.H.) won a pair of events, capturing the 55-meter dash (6.56) and the 200-meter dash (23.56). Also picking up wins for the Wildcat men were Kevin Greene (Silver Spring, Md.) in the mile (4:18.63), Daniel DeCrescenzo (New Milford, Conn.) in the 3,000 meter run (time), William Godfrey (Merrimack, N.H.) in the 800 meter run (1:59.83) and Cameron Lyle (Plaistow, N.H.) in the weight throw with a toss of 16.71 meters. The UNH women were led by graduate student Allison Letourneau, who set a school record in the 1,000 meter run with an ECAC-qualifying time of 2:48.16. That time also broke the facility record. Junior Keely Maguire (Manchester, N.H.) and Sydney Fitzpatrick (Billerica, Mass.) picked up wins in the mile (4:53.13) and the 800-meter run (2:17.79), respectively. Both of those times qualified Maguire and Fitzpatrick for the ECAC Championship. Also turning in ECAC qualifying performances were Rosemary Read (West Greenwich, R.I.) and Melody Pothier (Lisbon, Conn.) who went 1-2 in the weight throw. The Wildcats return to action on Jan. 27 when they take part in the Boston Indoor Games at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston.

Stony Brook’s track and field teams kicked off 2012 at the Long Island Championships over the weekend. On the men’s side, freshman Lamar Hayes (Voorhees, N.J.) set a school record and qualified for the IC4As in the 200 with a time of 22.23. Classmate Terry Martin (Blookingburg, N.Y.) won the triple jump (13.79m) while also setting a school record with his second-place finish in the 60-meter hurdles (8.34 seconds). Sophomore Daniel Denis (Bayport, N.Y.) took first in the mile (4:23.94) for the Seawolves. On the women’s side, Oliva Burne (Palmerston North, New Zealand) and Patricia Barry (Tipperary, Ireland) both posted ECAC-qualifying times in the 3,000 meter run. Burne ran a 9:55.65 and Barry clocked in at 1:01.59. Sophomore Annie Keown (Aukland, New Zealand) placed second in the mile (5:10.37). The indoor season continues next weekend for the Seawolves at the Metropolitan Championships at Manhattan and the Armory.

Vermont hosted in-state foe Middlebury in a dual meet on Friday night in Burlington. The Catamount women ran away with a 110-41 victory while the men had to settle for a 77-77 tie against the Panthers. For the women, junior Julie McGilpin (Westfield, Mass./Westfield) and sophomore Yolanda Ngarambe (Marsta, Sweden/Rudbeck) both set facility records. McGilpin set a new mark in the 500-meter run in a time of 1:16.55 and Ngarambe won the 1,000-meter run with a time of 2:54.51. In the field, Mary Krug (Essex Junction, Vt./Essex) won the pole vault (3.35m) for the second time in two weeks. For the Catamount men, meanwhile, freshman Evan Keating (Glens Falls, N.Y./Glens Falls) was the champion of the 55-meter dash with his time of 6.71. Aaron Tenney (St. Albans, Vt./Bellows Free Academy) posted a personal best of 1.95 meters to win the high jump. UVM returns to action on Jan. 27 as it heads to Boston to compete in the Reebok Classic at the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center.
