CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – With the America East Indoor Track and Field Championship just a month away, several student-athletes got in the championship spirit over the weekend picking up weekly conference honors.
Albany sweeps the track awards while Maine takes the field honors. Paul Lagno (Salt Point, N.Y./Millbrook) and Kathryn Fanning (Manlius, N.Y./Fayettteville, Manlius) net the Male and Female Track Performer of the Week honors for the Great Danes. Trevor England (Auburn, Maine) and Jesse Labreck (Oakland, Maine/Messalonskee) bring the Male and Female Field Performer of the Week back to Orono.
Lagno set both a meet and school record in the 3,000 meter run as he clocked in at 8:16.66 to take first place at the Penn State Nittany Lion Challenge over the weekend. The senior broke his own record set last year and qualified for the IC4A Championships.
Fanning registered a 4:51.88 mile at Penn State to win the event, setting a school record and personal-best mark. She also qualified for the ECAC Championship with her time.
England easily qualified for the IC4A Championships with a distance of 48’5.25” in the triple jump at Dartmouth this weekend. England also won the long jump in Hanover, N.H., leaping 21’2.75.”
Labreck qualified for the ECAC Championships in two events at Dartmouth winning both the high jump and the 60 meter hurdles. She cleared 5’8” in the high jump and turned in a time of 8.66 in the hurdles.
Albany had a record-setting day at the Penn State Nittany Lion Challenge, as four student-athletes went on to set school records in four different events. Kathyrn Fanning (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) recorded a 4:51.88 mile to finish first and break a record set in 2007. For the men, Sherez Mohamed (Albany, N.Y./Academy of Holy Names) ran six tenths of a second faster in the 600m (1:36.00) than the previous record while Paul Lagno (Salt Point, N.Y./Millbrook) shattered his own record in the 3,000 meter run clocking in at 8:16.66 to place first overall. In the field, Alexander Bowen (Beacon, N.Y./Beacon) became the first Albany track and field athlete to leap over seven feet in the high jump (7’0.25”) to break a record set in 2002. Alfonso Scannapieco (Mohegan Lake, N.Y./Lakeland-Panas) soared 16’6” in the pole vault to finish first and capture a meet record. On the day, the Great Danes picked up 13 combined ECAC/IC4A qualifying marks. Albany gets back on the track this weekend at the Great Dane Classic in New York, N.Y.
Binghamton gets back in action this weekend at the Upstate Challenge at Cornell.
Boston University begins its season at the Multi-Team Meet at home starting on Thursday.
Hartford has another week off before competing at the Reebok Indoor Games in Boston.
Maine’s men’s and women’s track and field squads both finished second at Dartmouth this weekend. For the men, Frank Del Duca (Bethel, Maine) and Trevor England each won events in IC4A-qualifying marks. Del Duca took top honors in the 60 meter dash with a time of 6.98 while also placing second in the 200 meter dash. England qualified for the IC4A Championship in the triple jump with a distance of 48’5.25.” On the women’s side, Jesse Labreck and Jillian O’Brien (Buffalo, N.Y.) led the women’s squad. O’Brien won the 60 meter dash in a time of 7.82 while Labreck captured wins in the 60 meter hurdles (8.66) and the high jump (5’8”). Maine returns to action this weekend with a meet at Bates.
Competing at the Gotham Cup, an unscored team event, UMBC put together another record-breaking performance. Senior Aaron Brooks (Upper Marlboro, Md./DeMatha) broke his own school record in the shot put, placing third in the event with a toss of 15.71 meters (51’6.5”). Junior Cameron McDearmon (Owing Mills, Md./Franklin) also had a strong showing in the field for the Retrievers as he won the weight throw with a distance of 17.28 meters (56’8.5”). For the women, freshman Mercedes Jackson (Huntington, Md./Huntington) won her third race in as many collegiate meets, once again taking the top spot in the 60 meter dash (7.55). UMBC continues its busy January slate when it makes a short drive down to Landover, Md., on Saturday for the Terrapin Invitational.
New Hampshire hosts Holy Cross and Stonehill this weekend in Durham.
Stony Brook also takes to the track this weekend at the Long Island Championships.
Vermont competed in a quad meet over the weekend at Dartmouth with the men’s and women’s teams both placing third in the team standings. Leading the way for the Catamount women on the track were junior Julie McGilpin (Westfield, Mass./Westfield) and senior Morgan Powers (Cincinnati, Ohio/Indian Hill). McGilpin took home gold in the 1,000 meter run with a time of 2:54.47 qualifying for ECACs in the process. Meanwhile, Powers claimed victory in the mile run clocking in at 4:59.68. Junior Mary Krug (Essex Junction, Vt./Essex) finished first in the pole vault with a mark of 3.51 meters for UVM. On the men’s side, Alex Judge (Williston, Vt./South Burlington) finished just 0.79 seconds behind the winner to take second in the 200 meter dash. Peter Foley (Oakland, N.J./Indian Hills) placed second in the shot put (14.91 meters) qualifying for the New England Championship and setting a new personal best. Nick DeLuna (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa) won the 800 for the Catamounts in 1:59.81. Next up for UVM is a home meet against Middlebury and St. Peter’s this weekend.
