Boston U. came out on top last night in the battle of unbeatens in Albany, N.Y. The Terriers overcame an early deficit to top the Great Danes 58-54 and move to 5-0 in conference and 12-6 overall.
Albany (11-8, 5-1 AE) outshot Boston U. by a slim margin, 35.2 percent to 34.8 percent, and outrebounded the Terriers 40-34, but the Terriers went to the charity stripe 20 times and hit 13 attempts.
Junior guard Mo Moran paced the Terriers with 17 points and five assists, while senior teammate Alex Young scored 13 points. Albany junior Ebone Henry notched her fourth double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds.
In Orono, Maine (4-14, 1-4 AE) earned its first 'W' in conference play 70-60 over visiting Vermont (8-11, 2-4 AE). Four Black Bears reached double-figure points led by Samantha Baranowski's career-high 18 points. Freshman Courtney Anderson, who tallied 10 points, dished out a team-high four assists.
Vermont rookie Niki Taylor, a Maine native, netted a team-high 17 points and collected nine rebounds while playing 30 minutes. Junior Shanai Heber pulled down 13 rebounds for consecutive games with double-digit boards. The Catamounts outrebounded the Black Bears 43-37.
Earlier in the day, the coaches' preseason pick to win the league, UMBC (10-8, 4-1 AE), avenged last year's semifinal loss to Hartford (10-9, 1-4 AE) with a 71-59 victory in Catonsville, Md. Both teams had four players score in twin-figures, but it was UMBC senior forward Erin Brown's game-high 24 points which made the difference. Reigning two-time Rookie of the Week Lauren Chase scored a career-best 18 points while also serving up seven assists.
Junior forward Nikkia Smith led Hartford for the second consecutive game with 14 points and six rebounds. Sophomore guard Daphne Elliott grabbed a team-best nine rebounds.
New Hampshire (10-7, 3-2 AE) suppressed a Stony Brook (4-15, 1-5 AE) comeback attempt to win 63-53 and move above .500 in America East. The Wildcats shot 47.1 percent from the field with senior Denise Beliveau shooting 6-of-8 and finishing with 19 points. She also compiled seven rebounds, two assists and three steals.
Stony Brook senior Whitney Davis netted 17 points for the Seawolves. Jessica Previlon corralled a team-high seven boards and the Seawolves controlled the glass for the game 33-26.
