In the world of sports, injuries are inevitable. The only
time a player or coach wants to hear the word “broken” is when it’s referring
to a record.
Last season the UNH
men’s basketball team lost not one, but two pivotal players due to serious knee
injuries. Senior guard Alvin Abreu went down in the second game of the season against
Dartmouth with a torn ACL. Teammate, junior forward Ferg Myrick’s injury came
later in the Wildcats’ conference opener against Boston U. when he suffered a
ruptured patellar tendon.
With two players on the bench, the unfortunate circumstances
had a silver lining. After having to move positions around, it allowed other
players to gain game experience and step up.
After a strenuous year of physical therapy both Abreu and
Myrick are back in action. Both feel it was the support of the coaching and
medical staff that helped them bounce back and step on the court with
confidence.
