CAMBRIDGE, Mass – University of Maine senior Riley Masters (Bangor, Maine/Bangor) and Boston University sophomore Rosa Moriello (Naugatuck, Conn./Naugatuck) earned Performer of the Week honors for the third week of the cross country season.
Masters picks up his second straight Performer of the Week honor after pacing the Black Bear men to a commanding 18-39 victory over New Hampshire in a dual meet over the weekend. The 2010 America East Conference champion bolted through the 8K course finishing in 24:51 to earn the win, his second of the season.
Moriello finished in third place overall in a 251-runner field at the Codfish Bowl at Franklin Park in Boston, running the 5K course in 18:25. The sophomore harrier led four Boston U. runners in the top-20 en route to a team win.
Albany had last week off and will return to action at the Great Louisville Classic in Louisville, Ky. The Great Dane men climbed a spot to No. 10 in the USTFCCA Northeast Regional Rankings during the idle week.
Binghamton also had last week off, competing next at the Lehigh Paul Short Invitational on Sept. 30.
Rich Peters (Bristol, England) led a group of four Boston U. top-30 finishers at the Codfish Bowl at Franklin Park in Boston over the weekend. Peters clocked in at 25:11 to win the 8K race, his second victory of the season, while teammate Peter Gilmore (Hanson, Mass./Whitman-Hanson) finished third overall to lead the Terriers to a second-place team finish. The Boston U. women caputured first place at the same event. Rosa Moriello ran the 5K in 18:25, good for third place. Kathleen Davies (Huntingdon Valley, Pa./St. Basil Academy) and Nikki Long (Fort Collins, Colo./Rocky Mountain) finished fifth and sixth, respectively. Both Boston U. squads are ranked twelfth in the Northeast region and will return to action on Oct. 8 for the New England Campionships at Franklin Park.
Hartford returned to action this weekend competing at the annual Ted Owen Invitional at Stanley Quarter Park. Senior Andrew Chalmers (Ashland, N.H./Plymouth Regional) led the men’s squad finishing 13th overall with a time of 26:45. The men placed fourth overall out of a 10-team field. Sophomore Megan Barry (South Yarmouth, Mass./Dennis Yarmouth Regional) set a PR in the women’s 5K race placing tenth with a time of 18:44. The Hawks will rest up for the next two weeks before heading to Franklin Park in Boston, Mass. for the New England Championships on Oct. 8.
Jennifer Lucy (Bangor, Maine/Bangor) took the lead early and cruised to a win to lead Maine in a tri-meet against New Hampshire and Husson. Lucy took top honors in the 5K by nine seconds with a time of 18:32 followed by freshman teammate Carolyn Stocker (Westfield, Mass.) in 18:41. The men competed in a dual meet with New Hampshire and senior Riley Masters collected another win cruising to victory in 24:51. The Black Bear men owned the top four finishers to earn the team win.
UMBC did not compete last week. The Retrievers return to action on Friday for the Paul Short Invitational in Bethlehem, Pa.
The New Hampshire women’s cross country team finished first in a tri-meet over the weekend, edging out host Maine and Husson University. Freshman Marina Slavin (Durham, N.H./Oyster River) placed third overall running the 5K course in 18:53. The Wildcat women had six of the top-10 finishers at Maine and currently sit at No. 9 in the Northeast regional rankings. The UNH men fell to Maine in a dual meet on the road. Sophomore Joseph Jourdain (Hudson, N.H./Bishop Guertin) led the Wildcats finishing fifth overall in 26:29. New Hampshire returns to action this weekend when both squads take part in the Paul Short Invitational at Lehigh University.
Stony Brook’s cross country teams competed in the Leeber Invitational hosted by Fairfield University. Freshman Tyler Frigge (Suffern, N.Y./Suffern) was the top finisher for the men’s team, running a 27:54. Sophomore Robin Lynn (Glen Gardner, N.J./Voorhees) paced the women’s team with a 20:17.87. The Seawolve women dropped two spots in the Northeast regional rankings to No. 8. Both squads will join UMBC, New Hampshire, Vermont and Binghamton at the Paul Short Invitational this Friday.
Vermont had the week off and will return to action at the Paul Short Invitational on Friday, as well. The Catamount women currently stand pat at No. 15 in the Northeast regional rankings.
