Campus Connection: Goalkeeping Tandem

This is the first installment of the new series, Campus Connection, where America East personnell get put into game situations that our athletes face every day.

The Boston U. women's soccer team has the luxury of two all-conference goalkeepers.

But how could head coach Nancy Feldman even begin to think of who to play? Easy: play them both.

Senior Alice Binns and sophomore Kelly King represent a talented and unique goalkeeping tandem for the Terriers.  Last season, King played the first half of every game with Binns taking over in the second half.  That strategy proved to be a successful one as King was awarded conference Rookie of the Year and Binns Goalkeeper of the Year in 2010.  The duo allowed only 12 goals all last season and at one point, registered 13 consecutive shutouts - the second longest streak in NCAA history.

While not splitting halves this year, Binns and King get to play the full 90 when they alternate starts in net.  Neither has disappointed, leading Boston U. to a 7-2-1 record with conference play opening this weekend. Opponents have scored eight goals against the Terriers this year, which puts them ahead of their record pace from a year ago.

We caught up with Alice and Kelly and put our interns, Pete and Chelsey, into the net to try to save some penalty kicks from 2010 Striker of the Year, Jessica Luscinski.
